Anne Hathaway To Appear In Spielberg's 'Robopocalypse'

Listen up, fans of robot uprisings that threaten the survival of the human race. For quite some time now, Steven Spielberg has been working on, and is in the very early development stages of, an adaptation of Daniel H. Wilson's sci-fi novel 'Robopocalypse' for Disney/Dreamworks. The screenplay for the film was put together by 'Cabin in the Woods' Drew Goddard and the movie is currently looking at an April 14th, 2014 release date. Early this summer, it was revealed that Spielberg was mighty impressed with Chris Hemsworth, in both 'Cabin' and 'The Avengers,' and was interested in casting the Aussie actor in the lead. Now it appears the female lead has also been scooped up, by another summer superhero movie presence. Anne Hathaway confirmed in an interview with Empire that...

"If Robopocalypse happens I will be in it, and I believe it’s quite real, though you never want to hang your hat on anything.”

Hoora--wait, what? If it happens? Did I miss something? I mean, sure, they haven't finished pre-production or anything, and the project could still evaporate, but up to now I was unaware of any uncertainty of its getting finished. It has a release date, it has a script, and Spielberg wants to do it. I'd say that constitutes favorable odds that the film will happen. All that aside, I love the idea of Anne Hathaway in this movie. Let's run a check: robots, an apocalypse, Thor, and now Catwoman? My only disappointment is that the movie is set to come out in April of 2014. One because it sounds like it would kill it in the summer months, and two because it means I have to wait damn near a year and a half to see it. Hathaway isn't just beautiful, she's an incredible actress. When she was Catwoman in 'The Dark Knight Rises,' it wasn't just the leather suit that captured our attention. My guess is that she just has a very cautious agent who has advised her to not take this as a given, but I have no reason to suspect 'Robopocalypse' won't happen...both the movie and the actual downfall of mankind at the hands of cyborg armies. Crazy? Perhaps.

What do you guys think? Excited Hathaway is on board? Do you have any reason to believe 'Robopocalypse' won't happen?

Movies evaporate all the time, regardless of director. Sometimes the timing just isn't right or they take too long getting prepped for the rights, or an actor has to bow out or the studio isn't happy with early talks... it just happens. I can understand if Hathaway approaches a film called "Robopocalypse" with a sense of caution. (still an incredibly cheesy name for a film, especially a Spielburg film)

Good for her and the movie with no doubt she would do a amazing job in this movie.

@John Apocalypse

Don't get me wrong, if whatever direction they take ends up working I won't be complaining. I'm not one to preach from the hilltops that something isn't 100% accurate to the source material. I guess my problem is that, as I read the book, I heard it was going to be a movie, which sort of changed how I pictured things while finishing the book. Needless to say, I have high hopes. My fear is that they make it some dumb generic AI takeover story, ex. I ROBOT.

Watching the World War Z trailer, it looks like they just took the name from the book and plastered it on some generic zombie action movie. Since Robopocalypse is written in the same style as World War Z, it has me scared.

@SeeBeeL

Everyone seems to be fine with what they did with Starship Troopers though

I read the book, there isn't really a huge female main character other than a little girl. A lot of minor female characters though. Hopefully they don't do what they look to be doing with World War Z,that is, completely butcher elements of the story in favor of a typical straight forward narrative.
