Just when you thought we were done with revisits to the wonderful world of Oz, Summertime Entertainment is readying another trip for 2014. The studio has just signed a distribution deal for their 3D animated musical 'Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return.' The film is derived from both L. Frank Baum's 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz' and the adventure book series penned by his grandson Roger Stanton Baum. The movie will follow Dorothy as she returns to a tornado-decimated Kansas. The voice talent assembled so far includes; Lea Michelle (Dorothy), Jim Belushi (The Lion), Dan Aykroyd (The Scarecrow), Kelsey Grammer (The Tin Man) and Bernadette Peters (Glinda). New characters will be voiced by Patrick Stewart, Hugh Dancy, Megan Hilty, Oliver Platt and Martin Short. Bryan Adams will be contributing songs to the film, which is slated to be released in the first quarter of 2014.
What is with all the renewed interest in Oz? First we get Sam Raimi's 'Oz The Great and Poweful,' which has already announced a sequel, and now we're getting an animated film to boot? I'm not necessarily knocking this. 'The Wizard of Oz' is one of the most beloved movies of all time, and was itself based on one of the most beloved children's books ever written. The interest in these characters and this universe has been around for many many years, but it just seemed like the initiative to return to the filmic world of Oz languished for so long. Is this current rash of Oz movies the pendulum finally swinging in the opposite direction after 1985's 'Return to Oz' failed to meet expectations? Though I'm not familiar with Summertime Entertainment, I am thoroughly impressed with the voice cast they have put together. I'm especially interested in what Dan Aykroyd does with The Scarecrow and what new character the incomparable Patrick Stewart may bring to life.
What do you guy think? Do you feel bombarded with new Oz films or do you welcome the influx? Are you intrigued by a 3D animated Oz musical?

Comment by Peter Finn on March 16, 2013 at 10:01am So it got pushed back again? I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I'm still looking forward to this, because I'm curious to see whether the classic Disney vibe I got from the trailer will actually be in the movie. Not crazy about the title change from Dorothy of Oz, though. This new title is really clunky.

It might as well be a comic or book. Live action film is the paragon of the narrative experience for me.

Comment by Chris Salazar on March 14, 2013 at 7:41pm on the fence. I hate musicals but Patrick Stewart being involved has me intrigued
Comment by Eric Turpel on March 14, 2013 at 7:21pm Can't we get Anna Kendrick or Emma Watson to play Dorothy instead?
Lea Michele singing? Let me give you my money. Seriously, she is one of the most beautiful and talented actresses working today and is being wasted on Glee. Her voice would make angels cry.
