Just in case you thought there was anything that could not be adapted for film, developments have come about on the Angry Birds movie. That's right, the cinematic version of that game you play on your iPad with the slingshot, the pigs, and the surly feathered protagonists. The project has been simmering for a while, with former Marvel Studios chairman David Maisel on board since last summer. The idea was to use Marvel as the model for producing and financing a slate of movies outside of the studio system in order to maintain creative control. Now it appears John Cohen has been brought on to produce the Angry Birds movie. Cohen also produced Illumination Entertainment's 'Despicable Me.' No director or writer has been signed, but the film is slated for a summer 2016 release.

Part of me wants to facepalm and bemoan the fact that not only is another videogame getting its own movie, but a freaking app at that. Can we really not pursue any original ideas? The thing that makes this particularly irritating is that these guys are talking about wanting to work outside the studio system and even outside of that corporate influence...and they still adapt stuff like this? That seems a dangerous precedent. However, Angry Birds is so cartoonish in its gameplay and basic design that it doesn't seem way outside the realm of possibility that it could be translated to a family film. In fact, it's already been converted into two animated specials for Nickelodeon. I guess I'm ok with the idea of a single Angry Birds film, but I don't see the need to turn it into a franchise. If nothing else, will the game really be relevant long enough to allow for multiple films?

What do you guys think? Would you watch an Angry Birds movie? Do you think this need for recognizable brands is going to start permeating out into smaller production companies?

Can we really not pursue any original ideas?

We CAN....but those movies won't bring in the money.

As much as everyone wants to bitch about adaptations and reboots and whatever, the fact of the matter is is that THOSE movies are where the big bucks are. Those are the movies people are going to see in mass. People will make all kinds of excuses to see idiotic crap like The Expendebles and Transformers and Twilight (annnnnnnd conversely good movies like the Marvel movies) due to the already recognizable iconography that they want translated onto the big screen, for better or for worse. Out of the top 10 highest grossing movies of this year, only ONE of them is an original property in Ted, and who knows how well that would have done if it wasn't from Family Guy mogul Seth McFarlene.

It's just easier today for people to accept movie concepts they're familiar with ahead of time rather than try to wrap their minds around a fresh concept being introduced for the first time while watching the film. As much as we go "Ah man, reboots and remakes and blah blah blah", our money is what they listen to, plain and simple. And since those are the movies that get the most money, those will be the movies getting made most often.

......that being said, the idea of a goddamn Angry Birds movie is still fucking ridiculous.

I couldn't care either way. If it's good, it's good. If it's not, it's not. Getting butthurt about capitalism isn't going to help anyone. Were it not for movies like Angry Birds and Twilight, good movies would not have the money to get made at all.

I think the many gifs say it all, really.

I don't understand why they try to make a movie based on things that either don't have a story or a story too short for a full length movie.  Like Battleship, and the Dr. Seuss movies.  Might as well hire the south park kids to come up with a bull shit story.

Alright, look. Angry Birds is a fun game. It's a super fun game, and I love it. But it does not deserve all the merchandise it has out. You can't go anywhere without seeing Angry Birds toys, towels, piggy banks, sheets, shoes, shirts, the list goes on and on. But seriously, a movie? You have to draw a line somewhere, people.

I could have sworn that Rio was the Angry Birds Movie. You can clearly see the Angry Birds in the cages in the Plane.
