Just in case you thought there was anything that could not be adapted for film, developments have come about on the Angry Birds movie. That's right, the cinematic version of that game you play on your iPad with the slingshot, the pigs, and the surly feathered protagonists. The project has been simmering for a while, with former Marvel Studios chairman David Maisel on board since last summer. The idea was to use Marvel as the model for producing and financing a slate of movies outside of the studio system in order to maintain creative control. Now it appears John Cohen has been brought on to produce the Angry Birds movie. Cohen also produced Illumination Entertainment's 'Despicable Me.' No director or writer has been signed, but the film is slated for a summer 2016 release.
Part of me wants to facepalm and bemoan the fact that not only is another videogame getting its own movie, but a freaking app at that. Can we really not pursue any original ideas? The thing that makes this particularly irritating is that these guys are talking about wanting to work outside the studio system and even outside of that corporate influence...and they still adapt stuff like this? That seems a dangerous precedent. However, Angry Birds is so cartoonish in its gameplay and basic design that it doesn't seem way outside the realm of possibility that it could be translated to a family film. In fact, it's already been converted into two animated specials for Nickelodeon. I guess I'm ok with the idea of a single Angry Birds film, but I don't see the need to turn it into a franchise. If nothing else, will the game really be relevant long enough to allow for multiple films?
What do you guys think? Would you watch an Angry Birds movie? Do you think this need for recognizable brands is going to start permeating out into smaller production companies?

Comment by Zayne Camacho on December 16, 2012 at 1:19am Jeez, now they're just whoring out Angry Birds for the cash. Seriously? A full length movie that's source material is a small mobile game with little to no story in the first place? This just proves that Hollywood is getting greedy now, and they'll cash in on anything that'll leash in a bunch of idiots that'll throw their money to anything that say's Angry Birds in the title.
Comment by King Badass on December 14, 2012 at 4:49pm THIS WILL BE THE GREATEST MOVIE EVER. NOT EVEN KIDDING.
Comment by Richard Schmidt on December 14, 2012 at 3:42pm I agree with Dubya on this, This has nothing to do with originality or running out of ideas .The fact is that Hollywood is a business so it will do projects that will bring in the money. People go in groves to see the big budget movies no matter how awful they might be. More original ideas are more risky so they have a harder time making through the Hollywood system. If we want more original movie we need to support those type of movies.
I have a feeling this will be a SOBS or probably a rental. I have a feeling that the studio will invest much effort into this. Just enough to make it watchable. The idea is workable and could be pretty decent. The question is will they put that effort into this project.Like I said the answer is prob no

Comment by BLAM! on December 13, 2012 at 11:56am @Marobot Because comics have plots that can be easily translated to film for the most part. Nobody has really come up demanding an Aquaman film and I'm still skeptical about a Deadpool movie considering one of this major characteristics is apparently breaking the fourth wall. Also, you must consider the track record of remaking 80's actions flicks and video game adaptations. It is not good, sure there are some remakes and adaptations that are passable but not a single one of them is ever going to be anything more than popcorn flick for most people.
But this is the newest version of an Artillery game, that's a double whammy of stupidity. No story to speak off and it's a game on an ipad. You remember how bad the Super Mario Bros movie was? Well this is going to be worse, there is simply no way around the retardation this is going to produce.
And when the cartoon TV show ever comes out, if it comes out it seems, it will more than likely suck too. But you wont know it hearing from the millions of people who don't give a crap about entertainment as an art form and more for just a distraction because they don't have the time to care about the finer points of films/music/literature.
They'll read their 50 Shades of Grey, watch their Twilight, and listen to Dubstep. All while playing this game built simply on the same formula as the current Call of Duty series. INSTANT HOLLOW GRATIFICATION.
Comment by Matthew A. Sawtell on December 13, 2012 at 11:43am Forget the facepalm, will somebody just headslap the Angry Birds crew, who keep thinking they got the next 'Mario' Franchise on their hands. Cripes, just show them the Mario Movie!

Comment by Dr. Detfink on December 13, 2012 at 4:09am I love how moronic Nerds are these days, whenever its an adaptation of a comic-book its all cool, but when it's a take on a video-game/cartoon, or a remake of a shitty 80's movie (Total Recall) there's all this bitching and moaning bout "Hollywood running out of ideas".
