It was just too good to be true. The cast of Shane Black's 'Iron Man 3' was shaping up to be quite formidable in many ways. Of course Robert Downey, Jr. would be returning as Tony Stark/Iron Man, and Sir Ben Kingsley was brought aboard as the film's chief villain. But the cast put together around these two included the likes of Guy Pearce, Jessica Chastain, and Andy Lau. The latter three would be playing scientists involved in the the inception and development of the Extremis technology; Warren Ellis' story arc supposedly providing much of 'Iron Man 3's plot. Then, sadly, the lovely and talented Jessica Chastain had to back out of the project due to scheduling conflicts. Now it seems as if Andy Lau is also bowing out. His reason? Fatherhood. Apparently Lau and his wife welcomed their first child last month and he would rather stay home and be a good dad than take a role in a superhero movie. 'Iron Man 3' has begun filming both in North Carolina and in China.
Some Mondays, you need a story like this. Lau is a tremendous actor and I loved him in 'Infernal Affairs.' I was really looking forward to seeing him in 'Iron Man 3,' and it seemed a good fit. That being said, how can you possibly blame the guy for turning down a big Hollywood movie to be a good father? I commend his resolve and his priorities, even if it deprives us of some sweet Lau action. 'Iron Man 3' marks the first time a Chinese production company will be co-producing a movie with Hollywood and Disney China wanted a prominent Chinese actor in the film. The frontrunners for his replacement now appear to be Chen Daoming ('Hero') and Wu Xiubo (Chinese TV series 'Before the Dawn'). The troubling thing about this announcement, especially combined with the Chastain news is that the cast list we were all getting excited about looks to be a bit shaky. Hopefully we don't lose anyone else before this thing is done.
What do you guys think? Are you disappointed Lau is out? Do you think anyone else will drop out before things really get rolling?

Comment by Kamikaze on June 29, 2012 at 7:26am I guess also it would be Laus first major Hollywood Blockbuster role and I could understand why, I personally am a big fan and I'm sure any project would benefit from having him because he brings a lot of credibility to the action side of any project.
That being said if someone asked me to go to China to make a massive movie that would be seen and loved by every single 13 yr old boy in the country, or hang out with my baby, I'd be staying home.
Comment by FabFilmFan on June 26, 2012 at 9:04pm His kid may not remember but his wife certainly will. Having a newborn is the most difficult thing I've ever had to deal with. Wonderful but difficult. He's a smart man.
Comment by nerdilicouse?! on June 26, 2012 at 4:45pm I cant help but feel there is some other reason he bowed out on this, his kid was born last month... if she was having the baby during then MAYBE but come on, how can no one else see something not right with this?
Comment by Jer G. Gernault on June 26, 2012 at 11:57am thats very stupid.
the kid is way too young to rememeber an abscence of a mere three, four months.
*tsk* I was kinda hoping this would help break Lau out some more internationally.
Also, not wild about the back up options. How about Simon Yam? Right?
Comment by AndrewWILLSONThe ShogunOfAustin on June 26, 2012 at 6:09am hey you got to be there for your kids and when you become a dad you have to quit some things you love, fact of life.
