Outkast's Andre 3000 (Andre Benjamin) is looking to once again expand his acting repertoire, this time in a way that directly relates back to music. The rapper-turned-actor is set to star in a Jimi Hendrix biopic called 'All Is By My Side.' The film will center on Jimi's discovery by the then girlfriend of The Rolling Stone's Keith Richards and his trip to London where he recorded his iconic debut album 'Are You Experienced.' It will therefore span only the years of 1966-1967. The script for 'All Is By My Side' was penned by John Ridley ('U-Turn,' 'Three Kings'). It will begin shooting in Ireland in the next three weeks and was co-produced by Richard Kelley's Darko Entertainment. No word yet on a release date.
I gotta say, I'm pretty excited about this. Jimi Hendrix is one of my favorite musicians and I'd love to see a biopic about him. I know 'The Wire's Wood Harris played the legendary rock star in a made-for-TV movie in 2000, but I haven't seen it yet. Any Spillios out there care to weigh in on it? What strikes me as interesting about this project is that here again we have a micro-scale biopic much like 'My Week with Marilyn' and 'Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho.' While I'm intrigued at seeing all the infinitesimal details and circumstance that lead to the creation of 'Are You Experienced,' I can't help but feel like Hendrix's life is packed with interesting material that we won't see in this film by the very nature of its approach. Not that I think it'll be bad, just quite limited. In any event, I have been impressed with Andre 3000 as an actor and I think he'll do a fine job inhabiting Hendrix.
What do you guys think? Has this role been well cast? Does the limited scope concern you? What is your favorite Hendrix song?

Comment by darlinho on May 12, 2012 at 7:29pm I know people might laugh but when i heard a movie about Jimi was being made i wanted to see donald glover play him. However i can totally see the resemblance with Jimi and Andre. So not a bad choice.
Comment by DoctorVik22 on May 10, 2012 at 12:52pm "Castles Made of Sand" is a great song.
Comment by Austen Messick on May 9, 2012 at 9:23pm I am so sick of these bio-pics. If you want to know Jimi Hendrix, then listen to Machine Gun. I hate turning these rock-gods into a fucking lifetime movie.
Also, Jimi had a rather deep voice and Andre has a much higher one. He looks like him kinda and I really respect him as an artist. Those Outkast albums are amazing, and I am sure his heart is in this.
Also, Jimi's family has a problem with anything to do with drugs. I feel like this will just be another movie that is sanitized for American consumption.
My imaginary example of a good movie about rock-gods is: A movie about Lynard Skynard where they are playing Free-bird on the wing of the plane as it goes down.
That is a movie that is equal to the music. I do not like taming these folks their music was epic and mind blowing. Why should the movie they make about them at least try to equal that?
Comment by Stephanie on May 9, 2012 at 11:09am I am really excited about this. I saw this news on a hip hop music site. I I know Andre will work hard to make this great.
Comment by Dawnell_do on May 9, 2012 at 7:16am Could be interesting.
Comment by Boatloads1017 on May 8, 2012 at 10:48pm I can see it. I'd need to see him in a trailer before I'm sold.

Mos Def is older than Andre
Comment by The Weekend Box Office on May 8, 2012 at 10:15pm I feel that this could work well. I have never had any complaints about Andres acting and he looks enough like Hendrix. With the right director it could be a great film.
Comment by Ferry2dead on May 8, 2012 at 8:22pm COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!
Comment by DickVanSwype on May 8, 2012 at 5:18pm Agreed, Andre is too old. You know who I would love to see do it? Mos Def. The dude proved he can act in this past season of Dexter. I think he would be great.
