Amazing New 'Star Trek Into Darkness' TV Spot

I think it's safe to say at this point that J.J. Abrams' 'Star Trek Into Darkness' is my most anticipated movie the year. The initial trailer was absolutely stellar, so much so that even comically sweded versions of it get me excited to see the movie. Last night, during a certain sports spectacle, a new TV spot for the film was revealed. The new spot plays up the imposing villain played by Benedict Cumberbatch. There's something ironic about the fact that Kirk (Chris Pine) asks him who he is, only to have the action move on to something else before we hear an answer. The exact identity of Cumberbatch's baddie has been the stuff of massive geek speculation ever since he was cast. Obfuscation aside, I still really dug this new spot. Take a look at it below and let us know what you think.

'Star Trek Into Darkness' now hits theaters May 17th

@Dr. Detfink: That may have something to do with Berman, who is in control of the franchise these days. He was never in agreement with Roddenberry that Starfleet was about exploration first and combat second, that humanity had evolved past the need for warfare and petty struggles. Berman preferred Starfleet as military FIRST...and exploration a distant third.

It's one of the things that I didn't like about DS9 and the latest of the ST films. WAY too much emphasis on combat and action, not enough on exploration and wonder that is the CORE of the franchise.

ANd to answer a comment below, Wraith of Khan worked BECAUSE of the original serieas and the strength of the actors. Yes, it was a revenge story, but a hopeful one despite the loss of Spock and Scotty's nephew. As a one-off story, it works...because it deals with MUCH bigger issues than Khan. Age, legacy, family, friendship, change, mistakes...WoK was over a decade in the making. This? This is the SECOND revenge story in a row, and NOTHING about what made ST unique. ST9 was a good reboot, but it had flaws that we hoped would be addressed now. Unfortunately, it looks like NONE of the those flaws were addressed and instead were expounded upon.

Also at this rate, the Enterprise will be NCC-1701 E by the time the 5 pic rolls around....

Boy, if you don't know anything about Cumberbatch (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy) get ready to be amazed!

This movie does confirm one thing, that NO ONE no longer believes in Roddenberry's vision. Human beings are just as much assholes as they were before. All this space travel age does, give every one something else to fight about.

@ KP Spark ... actually no they didn't. People praised Wrath of Khan regarding the plot, how it played it with man playing God, an original (at the time) revenge angle and it's drama. The controversy was regarding ofcourse the ending, not the Star Trek concepts used. They were accepted at the time. This whole 'people said this is not the Star Trek I know when WOK came out' argument is simply not true

Sherlock is as arrogant as ever. Love it.

So all you people who are saying that "oh this isn't the Star Trek I know waaa". Yeah, that's the same thing they said when Wrath of Khan came out.

Where is all this "the rebooted Star Trek was just ok" coming from? I remember everyone losing their shit about how great it was when it was released.  Although the biggest trailer to advertise Star Trek Into Darkness was the first Star Trek.  I loved the reboot and can't wait for this film to come out.

@Jack68

I agree.

@Leo of Costa Rica.

It's supposedly Brian Salisbury. Who knows why he isn't given his own page though to post these blogs, given how opinionated they are.

And I agree with Jack68 regarding the irony that Star Trek XI borrowed elements not just from Nemesis (Romulan villain, superweapon), but plot points from Wrath of Khan (revenge motive, nebula based battle, death of a major character), Search for Spock (resurrection through said dead character through another), The Voyage Home/First Contact (time-travel), but praised for being revolutionary and original.

And InfiniteAlpaca does have a point too, though I think Star Trek has always succeeded better on TV when it comes to the more heavy handed subject matter, it still managed to convey the same sense of optimism and hope for the future where people of all sexes and races worked together to defeat a common foe or find common ground. Good examples of the latter would be the Klingons for instances, total villains in TOS but allies in the Next Generation-era. And a possible alliance with the Romulans was hinted at the end of Nemesis, but being such a poor film and effectively the nail in the coffin for Roddenberry's version of Star Trek, that has been cast aside.

Abrams-Trek, to me, seems all very generic. Yes, the characters are named Kirk, Spock and McCoy, yes, it's on a ship called the Enterprise, but it's all very similar to every other sci-fi blockbuster in image from the last near-10 years.
