Sorry, lovers of 17th Century English poetry, but it looks like you won't be getting that effects-heavy version of 'Paradise Lost' starring Bradley Cooper any time soon. Alex Proyas ('The Crow,' 'Dark City') had been set to direct an adaptation of John Milton's epic poem for Legendary Pictures, which had been slated to begin shooting last month; a crew having already been hired for the Australia-based shoot. Then, just before shooting was to commence, the film saw its start date pushed back to early this coming summer. Now those crews have been sent home and the whole project has been killed due to budget problems. The story of 'Paradise Lost' would have focused on the battle between Lucifer (Cooper) and the Archangel Michael (Benjamin Walker).
It's always about the money, isn't it? Well, yes it is, because studios are in the movie business to make money so failing to come in under budget has been the kiss of death for many a film. Recently it has sunk the likes of 'Arthur and Lancelot,' and 'Akira,' both of which were Warner Brothers films; a studio in partnership with Legendary Pictures. I have to wonder if the problem is that Warner Brothers is sinking so much money into post-production on 'The Dark Knight Rises' that they can't take any financial risk on other projects until they begin to see grosses from their summer superhero epic. That's conjecture of course, but whatever the reason, I have to say that, in the words of the great Lord Humungus, I am gravely disappointed that I won't get to see 'Paradise Lost.' Not that I'm a huge fan of Milton, although even if I were the film version would probably not have held too closely to the source material if it had any intention of making money, but the idea of Bradley Cooper as the devil struck me as an interesting piece of against-type casting and I was really looking forward to seeing what he did with the role. There is always the possibility that this project could be resurrected at some point, but given the climate of belt-tightening in Hollywood at the moment, I'd say 'Paradise Lost' doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell.
What do you guys think? Were you interested in seeing this film? Are you surprised the studio pulled the plug? Who are your favorite cinematic Satans?

Comment by Cranky Old Dude on February 12, 2012 at 8:52pm Seeing "Aurthur & Lancelot" get the lance and Akira get sent back over seas does not disappoint. But the loss of Paradise Lost is deeply frustrating as we have a dearth of new, original, and untapped material out there. That struggle between Lucifer and Micheal IS the stuff of Legends.............
Comment by Cinema Dr. AJ on February 12, 2012 at 2:06am This movie had so much potential... like... the director, the cast, the source material, just... god dammit. Could have been unfathomably good

Comment by Connor Roy Shipp on February 11, 2012 at 9:57am damn i was actually really interested to see what he did with it... and seeing what Bradley Cooper did too.
Comment by Chad Ehrhart on February 11, 2012 at 12:25am Damn too bad for Alex Proyas he hasn't had a good movie since Dark City.
Comment by David on February 10, 2012 at 10:30pm It's probably for the best. This material is just too difficult to adapt to a film without being compromised or glamorized. Plus, I haven't liked the last couple of Proyas' films. He's changed a lot since The Crow and Dark City.
Comment by Richie Vega on February 10, 2012 at 9:45pm Aw man. Bad news for movie lovers.
Comment by Lunatik on February 10, 2012 at 9:34pm I was actually looking forward to this..:(
Comment by Alexander Orbanic on February 10, 2012 at 3:18pm Darn. Loved the poem a lot and (if done right) this could have been awesome. But shit me whining is not bringing it back is it.
This news sucks. I wanted to see this. I hate money sometimes.
