Albert Brooks Signs On To 'Finding Nemo 2'

Remember when 'Toy Story' was the only Pixar property to be franchised? Then came the disappointing 'Cars 2,' and this year will see the release of the 'Monsters, Inc' prequel 'Monsters University.' We also know that the studio is developing a followup to their 2003 hit 'Finding Nemo.' Andrew Stanton, as we learned last summer, will return to direct. It wasn't long after his signing on that Ellen DeGeneres, who voiced the lovably flaky Dory in the first film, would also be coming back for the sequel. Now it appears that Albert Brooks will also be returning. Brooks voiced Nemo's frantic father, the tragically unfunny clown fish Marlin. Brooks most recently appeared in Judd Apatow's 'This is 40' and prior to that earned a great deal of critical praise for his turn as the violent gangster Bernie Rose in Nicolas Winding-Refn's 'Drive.' 'Finding Nemo 2' isn't due in theaters until 2016.

This sort of falls into the "if they were going to do it anyway" category of good news. Sure, I'm excited that Brooks is coming back, especially given that the length of time it took to sign him suggested his return was not entirely certain. Even though Nemo was the titular character of the first film, it was Marlin's pursuit of his abducted son that gave the movie its narrative threadline and emotional core. Brooks' casting for the sequel was probably the most vital in that regard, though we obviously don't know how is character will work into the new script. All that being said, are we doomed to get sequels to all the Pixar films? I'm not saying Pixar is incapable of creating strong sequels, see both of the 'Toy Story' followups for reference, but so much of what we love about this company is their originality. They craft some of the most imaginative and innovative stories in animation and I'd hate to see them rest on their laurels too often.

What do you guys think? Are you happy that Brooks is returning? Are you optimistic about the sequel?

Pixar... sequels.... Incredibles 2?

Yeah I just want them to bring up new ideas- I know that Brave didn't do so well, but keep giving us new stuff. I don't want to see UP2- Uppier.

Seriously though, didn't these guys use to draw a line in the sand as though to state how much against non-Toy Story sequels they were? I just don't understand what warrants this.

..... What?

I'm hemming and hawing about this one. It may well be good but I really wish Pixar would stop doing sequels, in general.

Thank god there's no Wall-E or A Bugs Life sequel announced yet...right?

Finding Nemo and Monsters Inc are my two least favorite Pixar movies. theyre too childish for me. i wonder what the plot of the new one will be. Finding Nemo Again

I mean really, can anyone tell me what this movie is about from this trailer.

It looks like a bunch of college assholes running around in a bad buddy comedy. What made the original Monsters film so good was the interesting concept of an organization that scares children but is ironically terrified of them.

Incredibles is the ONLY Pixar film that should have a sequel. Leave the rest well enough alone!

After seeing how horrible the new Monsters University trailer looks......I'm at the point of almost BEGGING Pixar to stop making these mediocre sequels/prequels. Especially for a film like Finding Nemo, which could only be hurt by it. There is no way to build off that film in a positive way.

The only reason the director wants to make another is because he burned out all his money on the massive John Carter flop.

Finding Nemo 2 would ruin the fabric of the first. I was hoping it could be a dory spinoff that takes play before Finding Nemo but the return for albert brooks all but assures that this will be a sequel. Nemo being lost again would be stupid, Marlin or Dory being lost is just a redundant excuse for a sequel, and coral being allive would ruin any point the first one had to make. Have the heroes who ended Disney's corrupt sequel practices have become corrupt themselves? Monsters University also does not look necessary.
