Ever since the thought of doing a third 'Ghostbusters' film entered the minds of the franchise chieftains, it's been a horrendous uphill struggle. Most of the drama surrounding this proposed project has come from original cast member Bill Murray who at first ignored the buzz and questions about a third film, and then reportedly put a copy of the initial script he was sent through a shredder and mailed it back to co-star/writer Harold Ramis. However through it all, Murray remained the linchpin to the film getting made. Well now, fellow star Dan Aykroyd finally seems ready to give up the ghost. While promoting his Crystal Head vodka, Aykroyd revealed that not only is it assured that Murray will not be in 'Ghostbusters 3'and that the film itself may be dead. Here's what he had to say to UK's The Telegraph...
I honestly don’t know. At this point it’s in suspended animation. The studio, the director Ivan Reitman and Harold Ramis feel there must be a way to do it, but Bill Murray will not do the movie. He doesn’t want to be involved. He’s got six kids, houses all over America. He golfs in these tournaments where they pay him to turn up and have a laugh. He’s into this life and living it. I know we’d have a lot of fun [but] I can’t be mad at him. He’s a friend first, a colleague second. We have a deep personal relationship that transcends business and he doesn’t want to know.
As much as die hard 'Ghostbusters' fans, myself included, would love to see another film, at this point I think it's better that this project goes the way of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. If Murray is so dead-set against doing the third film, I'd much rather it not happen than, say, see a 'Ghostbusters 3' wherein Peter Venkman has been recast; something writers Aykroyd and Ramis had considered at one point. I'm not entirely sure why Murray is so adamantly against being in another 'Ghostbusters' film, but I'm glad the writers don't seem to be trying to force a film into production without him. I guess what I'm saying is that, if Murray is definitely out, I'm not heartbroken that 'Ghostbusters 3' has, for the time being, been remanded to the containment unit.
But what do you guys think? Do you hold out any hope that we'll eventually see 'Ghostbusters 3?' If so, would you want to see it without Murray?

Comment by Headphones on March 1, 2012 at 10:03am Good for Bill Murray. Somethings are just best left alone. Sorry Dan, but I'm siding with Bill on this. Just don't do it. I love how this is some cheesy, 'lets bring the band back together and do a last show' type situation. Works in the movies, not in reality. Because we all know it's doomed to fail. Everyone has high expectations on it, and everytime things like this come up, it never works out. Just let it be.
Comment by Yourbigpalal83 on March 1, 2012 at 9:49am IF we can't get a decent 3rd movie with or without murray, then i say, just make another game. For some reason he did the video game, why can't he do another one. the game was a lot of fun, heavily flawed, but still a fun game, id love another one! OR...and this is a big maby...a live action tv show with new recruits.. i mean, why not? Its not like ramis, ackroyd or hudson are so busy with major films as of lately that they can't make the occasional appearance on a tv show version of the franchise! I mean, Alic baldwin is one of the main stars of 30 rock, why can't those 3 do the same?
Comment by zoe folkes on March 1, 2012 at 12:03am i guess im the only one that actually would like to see a 3rd ghostbuster movie with everyone back. they're old and still doing the ghost catching and its sad to look at so they bring in newbies to train. it would kinda be like the last cartoon version they did basically but i think it would've turned out ok. besides he did a movie called passion play....i think i deserve an apology for that terrible movie you did murry and you doing ghostbuster 3 would help in your favor.
Comment by It's Just Ryan on February 29, 2012 at 11:17pm The only thing I want to know is if we get Ernie Hudson back.
Comment by Marz on February 29, 2012 at 10:58pm sounds to me like Bill is just being a lazy old full of hem self jack ass.
Comment by The Profit on February 29, 2012 at 10:03pm It pains me to say this, but it's too little too late. Some movies were meant to die in the 80's. Ghostbusters was one of my favorite movies as a kid growing up. I don't even want to see a reboot of this. Just leave it in the past where it belongs.
If Murray isn't interested, I think that they should give this one up. I just get a horrible Blues Brothers 2000 vibe when I think about a new Ghostbusters movie without him. Why not just move on and do new stuff? I do think that Ghostbusters 3 could potentially be great if written by the right guys, and with the original actors, but this just doesn't sound good.
Comment by MuttonChop Cartoons on February 29, 2012 at 7:57pm Hey just make a few more games, those were fun and felt just like the movies more so than a third film would especially written by some of the writers from, "The Office" series... yuck. So if this one doesn't happen hey its a great two film's and I'm not complaining if Murray doesn't feel the writing is there enough for him to jump on bored with it.
Comment by Chris Bartel on February 29, 2012 at 7:48pm bill Murray probably still feels burnt after the 2nd ghostbusters movie, considering the fact a lot of the script he helped write for the 2nd one was thrown out, i would like to see a new ghostbusters movie but i think these guys are too old for a 3rd one.
They could take and make a 3rd movie revolving around a new group of people who idolized the ghostbusters and it could be set 30 years in the future where the ghostbusters are more of a fond memory, paying homage to the original while not trying to be the original (i know this is more of a fantasy because anything that comes out of hollywood in this day in age as a homage is terrible)
Comment by William D White on February 29, 2012 at 7:42pm I'm happy with one AMAZING FILM, one great film, and one solid game that is the closest I'll get to a Ghostbusters 3 with all the original actors. So who wants a Ghostbusters Extreme Movie?? ha
