Aykroyd Confirms Murray Out For 'Ghostbusters 3'

Ever since the thought of doing a third 'Ghostbusters' film entered the minds of the franchise chieftains, it's been a horrendous uphill struggle. Most of the drama surrounding this proposed project has come from original cast member Bill Murray who at first ignored the buzz and questions about a third film, and then reportedly put a copy of the initial script he was sent through a shredder and mailed it back to co-star/writer Harold Ramis. However through it all, Murray remained the linchpin to the film getting made. Well now, fellow star Dan Aykroyd finally seems ready to give up the ghost. While promoting his Crystal Head vodka, Aykroyd revealed that not only is it assured that Murray will not be in 'Ghostbusters 3'and that the film itself may be dead. Here's what he had to say to UK's The Telegraph...

I honestly don’t know. At this point it’s in suspended animation. The studio, the director Ivan Reitman and Harold Ramis feel there must be a way to do it, but Bill Murray will not do the movie. He doesn’t want to be involved. He’s got six kids, houses all over America. He golfs in these tournaments where they pay him to turn up and have a laugh. He’s into this life and living it. I know we’d have a lot of fun [but] I can’t be mad at him. He’s a friend first, a colleague second. We have a deep personal relationship that transcends business and he doesn’t want to know.

As much as die hard 'Ghostbusters' fans, myself included, would love to see another film, at this point I think it's better that this project goes the way of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. If Murray is so dead-set against doing the third film, I'd much rather it not happen than, say, see a 'Ghostbusters 3' wherein Peter Venkman has been recast; something writers Aykroyd and Ramis had considered at one point. I'm not entirely sure why Murray is so adamantly against being in another 'Ghostbusters' film, but I'm glad the writers don't seem to be trying to force a film into production without him. I guess what I'm saying is that, if Murray is definitely out, I'm not heartbroken that 'Ghostbusters 3' has, for the time being, been remanded to the containment unit.

But what do you guys think? Do you hold out any hope that we'll eventually see 'Ghostbusters 3?' If so, would you want to see it without Murray?

First of I too am a longtime GB fanboy, loved the movie, the sequel was whatever, but it was still cool to see Murray and his boys along with Slimer. I even thought the Cartoon was an awsome spin-off too!  I think it would be sweet to finally see a third with the original guys and deffinetly have a new crop to maybe bring a new generation and even a new trilogy.  But this whole backstory of it not happening because Bill Murray simply just isn't interested sounds flawed.  Ofcourse Murray is living large, has kids, all his houses etc, atleast for the film industry he's earned it and deserves it compared to most.  Because of that he doesn't need the money, and probably is the kind of guy who won't do the third just for a quick buck.  I'll bet Murray WANTS to be apart of a third GB but believes the scripts/pitches over all this time have been garbage, and till one better surfaces, will want nothing to do with it.   I'm sure they'll probably end up a third or even re-booting it for the sake of nostalgia. but Murray backing out of the franchise sounds like it's all about putting on something good on screen for GB3 rather than something for a quick buck, and again Murray doesn't seem like the kind of guy who wants to waste his time for that, he's got 6 kids man!!!!llol

This movie is driving me up the wall I wanted this years ago. To tell you how much I wanted this when I was younger is like a Star Wars fan wanted more Star Wars movies before the prequels came out. Even if , and I am saying if this movie was to be made a big problem of being mediocre and even worse to number two which I didn't was bad all. if you really want to see what number three would be like just play 2009 Ghostbusters  videogame.

Honestly a good ghostbuster film could be made with any stars.  It's all about the script and direction.

They should work it into the script somehow. The new recruits turn up, Ray and Egon are givin them the induction, and they mention how they must be careful to watch their backs at all times when in the field as their former associate Peter Venkman was tragically raped to death by Class 10 full torso vaporous apparitions...

That's what you get for refusing to do what could be the coolest movie of the decade so you can piss about playing golf, Bill!

(admittedly it could also be the shittest movie since Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but know we'll never know for sure, so I'm sticking to my hatred)

@Gauparte. I agree with your statement. The Ghostbusters game was alot fun. They should do a sequel for it.

But he voiced the game, and did a Ghostbusters bit in Zombieland. Why not do the movie?

They really should have pushed for a sequel to that game instead of wasting time on a movie that had little chance of happening in the first place.

Shows how much Murray appreciates his fans.......not at all

Forget all of the old cast! All-new Ghostbusters with Jonah Hill, Seth Rogan, Adam Sandler, Ana Faris, Rob Schneider, the guy who played McLovin', and Betty White! It'd be a blast!

They already made a Ghost Busters 3.  It was a multi-platform video game and had a lot of the cast returning, a nostalgic look at what happened in the past, had the rookie, had the unique humour that only Bill Murray and the other guys can provide and had the Stay Puft returning, and the firehouse and the ecto and everything.  As a fan of both the original movies it was perfect for me.  If there was a 3rd movie, I don't think it would manage to achieve the same greatness that that game had for me.  It would be a let down.  And I'm with you Yourbigpalal83, I would much rather welcome a sequel to the game over the movie.  I want to be a Ghost Buster.
