Akroyd Still Planning 'Ghostbusters 3', Reveals Plot

Source: THR

On a recent taping of the Dennis Miller radioshow, actor and writer Dan Akroyd spilled the beans on the oft-rumored 'Ghostbusters 3' and the current plot synopsis for the rebooted franchise. While the major sticking point in negotiations has always been Bill Murray's resistance to giving up his currently brilliant career for a quick namesake cash-in, Akroyd seems to think that the film would move forward regardless:

"Yes, we will be doing the movie and hopefully with Mr. Murray... That is our hope. We have an excellent script. What we have to remember is that Ghostbusters is bigger than any one component, although Billy was absolutely the lead and contributive to it in a massive way, as was the director and Harold [Ramis], myself and Sigourney [Weaver]. The concept is much larger than any individual role and the promise of Ghostbusters 3 is that we get to hand the equipment and the franchise down to new blood."

On said "new blood":

"My character, Ray, is now blind in one eye and can't drive the Cadillac... He's got a bad knee and can't carry the packs... Egon is too large to get into the harness. We need young blood and that's the premise. We're gonna hand it to a new generation."

There you have it. When the original team gets too old to do the job, it's up to a brand new (most likely gender and ethnically diverse) team to take up the proton packs and fight the things that go bump in the night. However, according to Sony there is still no plans to begin work on the film, especially without Murray on board. However, with the aging subplot it would be rather easy for them to simply write Murray out of the script. However, still no love for Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson)? Where's my "Team Winston" shirt at...

1) My childhood heroes with partial blindness and arthritic joints? Sounds depressing as hell!

2) No Murray, no Ghostbusters, simple. And they're not gonna win him round by publicly declaring he's not neccesary to the project, which, by the way, he IS.

3) Handing it over to 'new blood'? Is that the foul repugnant stench of Seth Rogan I smell in the air? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Ernie Hudson and Rick Moranis?

I have no problem with a Ghostbusters 3; I only object to a shitty Ghostbusters 3.

As for casting, I like Seth Rogen and the Apatow crew, but - fucksake! - does one of them (Seth, Jonah Hill, Paul Rudd, Jay Baruchel) have to be in every comedy nowadays? And if it's not one (or more) of them (usually playing the same characters) it's Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jack Black, Will Ferrell, or the galactically unfunny Steve Carrell. And I've already developed a "if Danny McBride's in it, it sucks" rule. I would much rather see some of the 'fringe' players - like Craig Robinson and Bill Hader, Rob Cordry - get a crack at this. When I see Rogen, Hill, etc, I usually don't see a character; I see Rogen, Hill, etc, because there's presently an oversaturation.

And lastly, the funniest person in Tropic Thunder was Robert Downey Jr. who isn't really known as a comedic actor. Second funniest? Tom Cruise. Actors aren't insects; get them out of their the audience's comfort zone and they'll regularly surprise you.

To all ghostbusters fans out there (including myself).......WE HAVE THE FIRST MOVIE,for whatever happens with the franchise.I think ever since the first movie (along with other movies around that time) people have been trying use the "Bill Muarry" character (u know the lovable jerk) it feels more of a staple in comedies now.Granted if one was to ever happen now would be the best time to make one, there are alot of great actors out there that could pull it off (hell the main cast for community along would make a perfect fit, incuding Chevy Chase.. that would just make it even funnier with this other old guy just coming in to the situation) And remember ghostbusters  is a mix of smart comedy, syfy, and a dab of horror.

Ghostbusters along with a number of films benefited for being in the 80's lack of cgi is one...but whatever happens ,happens is Dan Akroyd's baby.

If Seth Rogen is anywhere near this movie - if it's even made to begin with - I won't watch it.  I'm a Ghostbusters fan, but Seth Rogen has the uncanny ability to make everything unfunny.  Don't care about Craig Robinson one way or the other, don't know anything about Bill Hader, and Paul Rudd - interesting as he may be - probably wouldn't be a good fit for this.

I don't care if Bill Murray wants nothing to do with this movie; he has earned that right as an actor.  Not too big a fan of having Spengler and Stantz broken down.  Like someone said before (I don't remember who said it; I'm sorry - but, hey! I'm agreeing with you!), have Winston (he'd better be in this movie, damn it!) doing the field work and Ray and Egon doing the science tutelage.

Of course, all of this is conjecture, because who knows if the movie will even be made in the first place.

Ghostbusters 3 will be awesome, the original cast will train a new cast to fight the ghosts and the movie will definitly be in 3d, and the Ghosts will look cool as hell and im sure that Bill Murray will be in tha movie !! I can't wait to see what the ghosts look like because the technology has got so much beter since the 80's!!! I hope that Ivan Reitman directs the new film and it will be great to see Peter, Ray, Egon, and Winston to mentor a new crew !! I just hope they cast it right!!

New Ghostbuster should be Seth Rogen, Craig Robinson, Bill Hader and Paul Rudd.

This sound like a pretty good idea and can work. Its one of the only sequels I'm looking forward to.

I'm actually kinda liking the fact that there is a new guard coming in.  Hopefully they'll stray from the incredibly attractive droolfest Ghostbuster cast.  Lets face it.  One of the things that makes Ghostbusters awesome is the fact that these are guys who aren't action heroes but in fact four guys with unlicensed nuclear technology strapped to their backs who's bascially unfit, unhealthy and for the most part not used to a lot of physical activity.  So in other words they're basically just above average people (other than Winston who is in fact average) who are heroes.  That's how I always saw them.

I like the changing of the guard.  Though I'd personally like to see Winston oversee the actual on the field training while Ray and Egon handle the science stuff.  Though once again I hope and I HOPE that the new guard while being different still reminds us as to just why we all love Ghostbusters so much.

On a side note....I hope that Bill Murray comes back as well.
