A Review of THE BOOK OF ELI, by me, El Foggy

WOW, This Christianity stuff KICKS ASS!!!!!

The Book of Eli is yet another movie in a long line of Post-Apocalyptic movies. What does this have that's different and better than the others. Well other than the power of the lord behind it...

Well, First of all, I have to go back to my Daybreakers review, I said that they cram too much into their movie without mixing it together, here they have a post-apocalyptic sci-fi western that references and reminisces of "A Boy and his Dog", "A Fist Full of Dollars", "Mad Max" along with plenty of others, and it all works, they either mix it well, or down play it so it's not in your face.

All the acting is great, as everyone is given such great characters, from the main guys, Denzel and Oldman are fantastic if not a bit under played. But it's the secondary characters where the film shows it's charm, every character here has a extra dimension to them making them human and easy to relate to, with an appearance from Michael "Dumbledore" Gambon being the stand out, and most fun.

The action here is perfect here too, it's not frantic, out of control, constantly in your face, it seems fluent and best of all awesome. From camera shot's either showing you everything from a distance to swooping around to add the enjambment of the action.

If there's any complaints, it does get very preachy in it's final act, whether this is intentional or not, does take away from the movie. Christianity is not the main message of the movie, it's more a Mcguffin, it didn't have to be a bible, it could of been any book.

This is a film I highly recommend, it's got a good story with enough stuff that you could want from a movie, though flying into the generic zone a few times to often, it keeps you thinking way after the end credits, as many of my friends had lots of different theories about the film. And a good film should make people think. Now play with your Jesus happy meal toy.

I loved this movie and I'm an atheist. I didn't think it got too preachy, but Gary Oldman's character is obviously based on Christianity's forceful nature into converting everyone to what they believe in, whereas Eli is just an average Christian who lives by the Bible just to be a better person, not be someone who wants to exploit people through religion. I'd give it a High Full Price!!! Nice review, man.

Good review. Totally agree with you on how the action works in their favour by not being to flamboyant. If you have time, check out my review for the film here. Thanks.

I'm not anti-christian, I just think the film got a bit to religious towards the end. Like I said it's more like a Mcguffin

Nice review. Loved the hell out of this film and I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. It's not about preaching religion at all. It's just a classic 'man on a mission' story that relies on Eli's faith in what he's doing, and the fate that awaits for him. Eli's faith isn't religious. He's just doing what he thinks is the right thing to do. He has a choice, and he chooses to move forward and carry out his task.

Besides that, the film is just a great action film. The stylized violence is fucking awesome, and I love the suspense the film brings as the story gets deeper. The performances are incredible, and the visuals are top-notch. The Book of Eli is a great way to start off 2010.

I didn't find the movie preachy near the end and people get all pissed off cause its the bible. It could have been the Quran or the Tanakh and it would have been almost the same movie. Its all about having faith and Denzel kicks a lot of ass!
