Mike Newell might want to reverse time back to Film School.
The best way to describe this film is amature, it over uses everything it has, CGI, Slow-mo, that blurry cell moving thing that has never looked cool from it creation back 15-20 years ago. There are fight scenes in here, that look like they spouses of the power rangers.
But then, there's something to this film, you struggle to hate it, as you know it's going to be entertaining throwaway trash, but then there's just something not there for you to enjoy it. It's not that it's entertaining, it's not that it's fun. It's just something thrown into the mix that just doesn't work out.
I'll start with the story, which I'm split half and half on, the first half I just couldn't get into. It's cannot sit still, you blink and you've missed a plot point or two. It rushes everything so fast you're not given a chance to condense, think and make out of whats going on. Due to the way it's edited, you feel disorientated.
But after about 30 mins, maybe 45. It stops being smart and turns into what it wanted to be from the very beginning, a simple adventure story. It gives up throwing plot points at you, and just settles with a simple story. It takes the long way getting there, as it filled with pointless filler. But once it reaches that point it becomes an enjoyable enough film. Nothing memorable, but innocent enough of a film. So innocent in fact, you can almost forgive it's shambles attempt at a smart ending, instead of going for a simple one.
The main problem with the film isn't it's messy story, but the sheer daft direction. It's so odd how they make something that looks so expensive, look incredible shoddy, with it dumb camera tricks, a slightly toned down dose of a Zack Snider co-slow-motion-cain, and as I mentioned before, it's stupid use of that blurry cell movement thing that I don't know the name of but you'll see when you watch the move.
The is all a near recipe for disaster, but it's saved by one thing. Jake Gyllenhaal and all the other actors in this film. Believe it or not, they carry this sloppy mess across the entire 2 hour running time. Gyllenhaal is charismatic enough without being obnoxious and annoying, with a touch of seriousness to the character to make him feel a little vulnerable. Gemma Arterton is more than a simple damsel in distress, and Ben Kingsley is one of the oddest choices to play a villian in this movie yet, good or bad, it kinda owes itself to being seen.
I'm split on this film, I want to give it a good rating, mainly because it isn't all that bad, but I think many people will really dislike this film, mainly based on it's dumb choice of an ending. It's fun enough, though it takes the long route of getting there. It's harmless enough. And it's good enough to watch and then buy cheap on the DVD or Blu-Ray. I really can only give this a enthusiastic...
