Law Abiding Citizen is to Action/Suspense movies what a decently good movie is to a genre filled with nothing but clones of the Bourne Trilogy. Oh, wait.
With that being said, one should be clear, much like others of its genre, there are some good things about this movie and there are some bad things. However, unlike most of its predecessors, Law Abiding Citizen manages to override the bad with the good, and what's more, there is a clear shift from good to cliche, which isn't really a bad thing. It actually helps the movie to some degree.
Let's start with the good. first off the actors in the movie were superb. Gerard Butler is the standout main character, making the audience root for him to win, despite him killing people. The rest of the cast acts just as well, with standout performances from Jamie Foxx, Bruce McGill, Leslie Bibb, Colm Meaney as Nick Rice, Jonas Cantrell, Sarah Lowell, and Detective Dunnigan, respectively. Yes, I realize I just said Jaime Foxx was a good actor, but let us not forget he CAN act well, he just DOESN'T. After all he did do Ray. Not being a person to go crazy over kills in any type of movie, even I must concede to the fact that the kills in this movie range from disturbing[Warehouse Scene] to cynically hilarious[Judge Scene]. The best feature of the movie must be in the writing. The dialog between characters is timed and paced perfectly, amusing, on point, and keeps the non-action parts of the movie entertaining. Actually the writing is probably what led me to my ranking of the movie.[Bottom of Page]
Now, unfortunately, the bad. The bad in this movie is very limited. Actually it only consists of 2 major things. The firs,t being the worst, is that the last fifth of the movie is lacking. Almost severely. The amount of basic cliches used in the end of the movie almost made me mad at the director and writers, for being generally lazy. The second is the slight plot hole at the end, where everything kinda magically pulls together. But by that time, the movie will probably be over to you, and you'll be getting up and leaving.
Still, the great acting and writing in Law Abiding Citizen carries the movie, lacking ending and all. I give it a :
