My apoligize, this review may be a bit baised as I haven't seen the first 8 films.
This year, childrens films have suddenly turned adultirated, we had Fantastic Mr.Fox with it's humor abit to played to the adults, we had A Christmas Carol scaring the crap out of the youth, We had Where the Wild Things are gearing up children to be Criterion DVD collectors, UP which had a story about coming to terms with life and death and 9 a post apocaliptic movie for the little ones.
But only one film in that list has actually sucsseded at that daunting task, which is UP.
Which means this film falls flat, it's an action movie, and dull generic one at that.
It borrowes strongly from sci-fi film, with the main one being Terminator, and some others like a HAL 3000 look-a-like, that it's terrifiyied to do anything new, and it really flaws from it.
But it is quite entertaining, and in some moments scary, where the action is notched up to 11 and the little dolls become little badasses, which is where the film really works, as a straight up action flick. And the visuals are really cool, though the animation sometimes boarders on cheap, the creatures in here are so unique and so threating you are sucked into the threat which is created.
But the huge flaw is story, it's predictible and has been done so many numrous times before it hurts your head to think, it's a deep feeling of deja vu. It also calls for zero charicterization, you feel nothing for the characters, and know nothing of them.
And with a short time of just over an hour, it leaves no lasting effect.
