Warning: Spoilers Ahead (sort of)
It came to a surprise to me the manner in which Bioware decided to end Mass Effect 3. Now lately it has come to my attention that I am not the only one who has objections to it. But without getting into details about the ending or piling on more hate towards Bioware I will sum up how the ending left me feeling in two words, “disappointed and bewildered.” Those may count as three words but we won’t get into semantics right now. Allow me to tell you a different conclusion(s) of Mass Effect 3.
After a final confrontation with a Reaper/Harbinger Illusive Man (similar to the fight with the Shadow Broker), Shepard activates the Crucible and has the choice to enter a self-destruct command to all Reapers or try to take control of the Reapers. Something that reflects the line from The Dark Knight. “You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.”
Destroy the Reapers:
Shepard enters the self destruct command to Reaper ships. As some Reaper ships start to go haywire, Admiral Hackett orders all ships to give them everything they got. Ground Reapers topple over and are easily destroyed. Burning Reaper debris rains down from space. Shepard bloody and beat up can barely stand so Anderson picks up him and they look for a way to the Citadel presidium. Depending on how much support you have one of two things can happen.
More than 75% support and chose to destroy Reapers:
Shepard wakes up in a Hospital on the Citadel with his love interest by his side, words are exchanged, Anderson shows up and helps Shepard step outside where hundreds of people applaud that their hero is alive. Shepard gives an inspirational speech that’s heard across the galaxy (while scenes of people rebuild their civilizations). With his love interest around his arm the board the Normandy and fly off into the “sunset.”
Less than 75% support and chose to destroy Reapers:
Small Reaper ships start to blow up, Harbinger seeing that this is the end of his kind will not go down alone. Harbinger charges the Citadel and Hackett doesn’t have enough fire power to stop him. Shepard and Anderson die in the ensuing explosions. The galaxy rejoices with victory and mourns the lives lost everywhere. Your love interest says a few words like your still there then looks up and says goodbye.
Take Control of the Reapers:
While Shepard fuses his consciousness with all the Reapers, the power is so overwhelming that the Reapers go haywire. Admiral Hackett sees it as an opportunity to strike and the ships fire at the Reapers destroying them with ease. Shepard feels the pain of destruction and orders the Reapers to fire back at the armada in anger. Now, depending on how much support from the alien races you have two things can happen.
More than 75% support and taken control of the Reapers:
Admiral Hackett contacts Anderson about what is happening to the Reapers. Anderson seeing that it’s too much power to one man to hold, points his gun at Shepard. At the moment Shepard is about to react several Reaper ships are destroyed throwing Shepard off balance so Anderson shoots and kills Shepard. The galaxy celebrates, the Normandy crew toasts to their lost Commander, and your love interest says goodbye.
Less than 75% support and taken control of the Reapers:
Admiral Hackett tries to contact Anderson and Shepard about what is happening to the Reapers. Anderson believes that Shepard has come under the control of the Reapers points his gun at Shepard. Shepard uses a newly gained biotic Reaper power to kill Anderson and gains more focus to control the Reapers. He loses himself in the power, destroys the armada becoming the most powerful and ruthless being in the Galaxy.
There you have it, a new ending guide for yourself. Sure you have to use your imagination to really get a sense of that but I will take my imagination over what really happened. It may be living in denial but unless your a video game programmer or have to money to officially change the ending, you won't be seeing Bioware changing anything soon. But if you want to try I say hit them where it hurts, their wallets. Cancel your Old Republic accounts, stop supporting Bioware, don't buy their DLC, and send letters stating your disappointment with what should have been a worthy conclusion to all your actions since the first Mass Effect. If enough people do that for a significant amount of time, they may budge. Now if you'll excuse me I have some calibrations I need to take care of.

Comment by El Capitan Mexico on March 14, 2012 at 7:45pm The choices you made at the end of the first and second game were tough to make because you understood they would factor into the final outcome. But mainly I wanted the choices to impact Shepard's final struggle most of all. When I wrote the endings for the "Controlling the Reapers" option, the quote that came to mind was, "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." And in that case Shepard sacrifices his humanity for that power when humanity was the very thing he was fighting to save.
Although I haven't heard the thoery of "Shepard was indoctrinated" and honestly I find that it doesn't makes since. I agree with you, that is a horrible theory to run with. Thanks for reading through and I hate typos too. No worries.
Comment by El Capitan Mexico on March 14, 2012 at 4:41pm I understand what you are saying, I was disappointed but I'm not letting that keep me down. I was hit with a surge of inspiration after finding out the little difference in ending and how little impact my choices actually made in the end. I just had to write those ideas down. Then after reading it over I thought, I'd like to share this and see what others think.
Although the big problem I had is that there wasn't a choice to not break the cycle of chaos and preserve life with the destruction of the Reapers. If all those races are doomed to repeat the past then it should be their choice to do so. Because when you think about it, someone had to build the Reapers.
Comment by Arsène Lupin the Third on March 14, 2012 at 4:17pm Well not everyone would be pleased, that's just the way life goes, I loved the endings simply because they weren't Hollywood endings each required a major sacrifice for all sides involved which to me is what is required to as the child said break the cycle of "Chaos"
Comment by El Capitan Mexico on March 14, 2012 at 3:58pm That was the ending that I chose too and I thought it was okay, but it did leave me with a feeling of unfulfillment. Then when I found out the other two ending weren't very different my head just slumped down forward in disappointment.
Comment by Arsène Lupin the Third on March 14, 2012 at 3:50pm I rather liked the synethsis ending....
