@G-man 15 - No, I expected it to be what it was. However, what I didn't expect was a film that could have been an intelligent and humorous look at the tired tropes of the horror genre (much like the superior 'Tucker & Dale vs Evil' did), but ended up actually falling prey to it's own tropes and becoming tired itself. Other than a few great phrases and one or two geniunely funny scenes, the whole rest of the film was hackey plotting. I genuinely love Joss Whedon, but you can tell which parts of the script were his and where the rest went painfully wrong.
It ended up being a predictable, cliche-ridden, too-meta look at horror movies. If you're not a fan of horror, then you simply don't care about the constant references the film tries to cram into it's running time. If you're a big fan of horror, then the only real appeal is "ooh look, it's [insert film here]" every ten seconds. However, all that pales in comparison to the lazy screenwriting. It is LITERALLY just one giant Deus Ex Machina. Every problem is solved with the push of a button and some completely improbable solution magically presents itself.
Comment by Wint on April 24, 2012 at 3:57am I haven't had a chance to listen to that LEOG yet, so this was the first I heard about Randy. I am genuinely very sorry and hope he beats this thing. I am not religious type, so I'll just say my faith in Science is with you. My mum was very recently diagnosed with cancer and in all honesty things aren't looking good for her, so this is a subject quite close to my heart right now.
Comment by Davril Chorster on April 24, 2012 at 3:07am I'm 100% with Fungusmonkey; it's a high rental.
And G-man15, I heard form the Spill crew that it's a meta-centric deconstructionist horror/comedy and went to see with high hopes, only to be disappointed by the revealing opening credits and that all of the scenes that take place in and surrounding the cabin are boring. I understand why the college students, who are all good students, turn into 80 slasher film cliches but they not only become cliches in a cliched "horror film", they repeat the cliches and that's boring. All of the scenes with the scientists are good and so are the last 20 minutes.
Cabin in the Woods: High Rental.
