I think I see both people's sides of this, I'm just trying to figure out what the key miscommunication is.

Carlyle's POV seems to be that one really shouldn't alter established lore and tell a story using that type unless they either add something really good or at the very least explain WHY those things are different or were "misunderstood" until this point.

Korey and Co-host seem to take issue with any genre being pigeon-holed forever within any set definition restricting new creators from taking a subject in a new direction. Although Carlyle framed his disdain for Twilight with some strong words I'm pretty sure he didn't mean it that way.

I actually watched this movie today because I'm a huge vampire fan as well as a huge Spill fan and this whole thing has sunk into my brain since listening to the last two podcasts. After watching the film I know its definitely not the type of vampire story I'm really interested in overall, but the "Twilight mythos" isn't as far gone and out of left field as Carlyle thought it was, at least not to me. To me the reasons for the changes were alluded to enough and it seemed like that aspect of the universe was meant to come across from Bella's point of view as a bit confusing. The "bad vampires" were there to show us what odd balls these vegetarian vampires really are. If they seem a little off from the typical vampire, those outsiders come in and basically underline that point. Although the fact that sunlight doesn't do much to these vampires bugged me a bit, it seemed like the fact that it exposed their unearthly nature was good enough reason for them to avoid it and likely that's were the "misconception" comes from in the Twilight universe. Ultimately the entire film was framed for the purpose of a teen focused loved story playing off the vampires age old sex appeal and bad boy/bad girl thing that they've always had going for it. I've liked many other vampire movies more, but I'm still interested in seeing what comes next and at least it wasn't that god awful crap like in Underworld.

No matter what, though the thing I walked away from this movie with the most is that there is nothing about that's worth all of this trouble. So in the words of Rodney King "can't we all just get along?".

And Corey....you gave Carlyle a cop-out answer to his question of whether or not Twilight did anything interesting with the mythos. He was asking you directly, not whether someone else might have...

I fully agree with Carlyle in this debate. Changing the lore of an established myth is one thing, but completely dismantling it to fit your story is another. That wouldn't even be a big deal if not for that this story isn't made any more interesting by the inclusion of these so-called vampires. In fact, Meyer's take on vampires only makes her story even worse than it already is. Bella is already the worse Mary Sue I've ever seen, but since these vampires can circumvent drinking human blood there is no real conflict in her dating one, not even from family members. Seriously, if you take away the blood drinking you've got no connection to vampire lore that doesn't apply to dozens of other things. Be ashamed of pulling out Blade as a first defense, Corey. That was a really bad misstep. Plus, everything about the vampires in this reality is stupid as hell and it all contradicts itself. They go to high school to blend in, but they couldn't be more obvious in their abnormal behavior. Their skin sparkles in sunlight, so they only go to school on cloudy days. Clouds can clear up midday, so that too is bones-sticks-stones stupid.

After seeing the movie, the more I think about it I get a little more pissed. For something with a 2-hour running time, there should be more than 20 minutes worth of conflict. Matters aren't made any better by the fact that the noble "vegetarian" vampires gang up on the lone threat in a 7-on-1 gang murder in which they eviscerate and immolate this guy for...acting like a F*$%ING VAMPIRE!!! But what really irks the $#!@ outta me is the story and the message it ultimately sends. Not only is this story the glorification of a creepy pedophile, but it is as Carlyle called it: a harlequin romance novel about Vic the greaser. This is yet another horse$#!@ story about how the stand-offish loner is just waiting around for the right girl to come along at its core. Anyone with female friends can tell you how well buying into that works out, but on top of that you have the inescapable aspect that a 107 yr. old has no good reason to continually go to high school if he's not there to hunt. Hell, there's really no good reason for this "family" to stay in one place. Everything is constructed for the sole purpose of making this relationship work, and the relationship is an unhealthy as this guy is a unbalanced stalker and everything that supposedly makes him the "perfect boyfriend" amounts to a pile of ego-feeding monkey-$#!@. As if the world needed it, Twilight emerges as a story with nothing to say to its audience other than "there's nothing wrong with an attractive guy stalking underage girls, and you should be so lucky as to have some older guy creep into your bedroom at night to watch you sleep." This is bull$#!@, and it should've been called exactly that.

Don't get me wrong. I understand the point Corey was trying to make as a critic. The only argument I have with it is that Twilight is NOT a good movie. The story it presents is awful, and the presentation of that story is far from good. The dialogue is awful, the pacing suffers from the lack of plot to develop, but even the changes interjected to introduce the villain earlier did nothing but make the movie more disjointed. These things would and have gone unnoticed by fans of the franchise, so why waste your time giving this movie any credit for their sake? I'm of the philosophy that you rate any movie on its own merit, and not on who it was intended to appeal to. By that logic, one could easily make a case for Bratz being one of the best films of the decade. We all know it's not, and neither is Zohan, but they have specific demographics that they appeal to that think these movies are pretty good. The flaws in a bad movie go beyond personal taste, and Twilight has flaws that only its fans will ignore thanks to blind loyalty (trust me, I know this first-hand). You even pointed a few of them out. This is not matinee-worthy, and it's not worth a rental either. Just watch it on cable, or don't watch it at all.

my argument with "illegal piracy" is that without watching it? I wouldn't have ever gotten a chance to see it. If it had been playing ANYWHERE within 200 miles of me? sure I'd check it out... but NO theaters are playing it around me. After watching it yesterday? I will now actively seek out and own it on DVD in March putting very well earned money in their pockets... if there's a special edition? even better! Sometimes (in cases like these) I don't see how it's an issue if a movie in limited release is being watched when otherwise people couldn't see it.

Thanks ethan. Been waiting/looking for that. Didn't think it'd be up so soon. My sister-in-law tried to get in to see it at a horror fest in Toronto last month but it sold out, so I thought it'd be a while longer before showing up in that quality. Cheers.
