It may come as a surprise to all of you that I have not always exclusively worked in film. In fact, I once worked for
you, bringing you more salsa, mayonnaise, and most importantly, that holy relic of any restaurant near a sorority house, ranch. Night after night I toiled to make sure your fries weren't soggy and your salt had not washed off of your mediocarita before you got them. This of course had to be balanced against the prerequisite minimum of two smokes an hour, the occasional purloined bacon strip on my way through the kitchen, and sometimes a quickie on top of the lettuce box in the walk-in with whoever was the lucky
waitress of the week.
Ok, the last part never happened to me but I was unfortunate enough to walk in on it happening to someone else a few times. So why all this confessin' about my former aproned days? Why, because it ties into a minor movie news announcement today of course!
I wish I could say I had seen
Waiting. Although my fellow critics appear to have despised it to a man, every (and I mean
EVERY) person I've talked to in the service industry just adored it to pieces. Apparently the accounting of the wacky and occasionally disturbing behind the scenes events at an average restaurant smacked of truth in an amusing fashion to my former co-workers. The film has indeed built up quite the little cult following since it went to DVD.
I guess the belated popularity of the original has paid off because it looks like a sequel is on the way. The film is currently titled "Still Waiting" and goes into production later this month. Apparently pretty much the entire original cast is returning (
Ryan Reynolds, Anna Farris, Justin Long, David Koechner, Luis Guzman, Chi McBride, Kaitlin Doubleday, Robert Patrick Benedict, Vanessa Lengies, Max Kasch, Andy Milonakis, and
Dane Cook.) but nothing has been said to what extent they will be featured in it.
