I looked up old clips of Song of the South, today. I don't know why. It just popped into my head that I had been meaning to check to see if that was really as big a deal as people (the few who remember it anyway) say it is.

In case you don't know, Song of the South is where the song 'zipadeedooda' comes from. Ring a bell? It's also supposedly openly racist and people have told me that it was banned from shelves awhile ago, despite being very popular when it was released.

I vaguely remember watching it when I was little, so I was curious. Well, I watched a couple cartoon clips and read the live action plot summary on Wiki. My conclusion: Yes, it has definitly earned it's reputation as one of those things that Disney would rather sweep under the rug. And, as for the YouTube comments, I'm not sure if I should be happy or disturbed that people today do not realize that 'Tar Baby' is extremely offensive. I am happy that they are apparently innocent of such ugly terms, but it makes me angry when they write comments lecturing people for being too sensitive to blatently awful material.

It's a shame that Song of the South has the history it does. It's a well made film. Even though a lot of the stereotypes and stories are offensive by today's standards.
