ASK CARLYLE: Should Indy don the hat for 5?

Matt said…
Ask Carlyle: Dear Carlyle, with Indy 4 coming out on DVD Tuesday, what do you think Lucas and Spielberg should do with the 5th movie? I for one loved 4. It’s not the best in the series but, it was great to see Harrison Ford with the hat and whip again. However I didn't care for the aliens even though it was still good. What I'm hoping for, is that now that Lucas got the aliens out of his system, and saw how many people didn't like it, he will go back to Indy going after a religious artifact again like the previous three. What are your thoughts?

Look, I loved four. I really enjoyed the hell out of it, Aliens and all. First of all, lets talk aliens. I HATE, HATE, HATE all the fanboyish horseshit about how Indy is all about religious artifacts and not aliens – kind of this Reeses Peanut Butter Cup philosophy of genre filmmaking. “Hey you got your 50’s sci-fi in my late thirties pulp serial!” “No! You got YOUR late thirties pulp serial in my 50’s sci-fi!” There was nothing genre bending about what Lucas and Spielberg did. Watch those late 30’s early 40’s pulp serials. Aliens and archaeologists go hand in hand in those.

But wait! There’s more! The concepts being brought up in Indiana Jones 4? Not new. This is stuff archaeologists have been studying and the outer fringes of science have been examining for quite some time. The Central Americans of this era appear to have been far more technologically advanced than theories show they should have. Where did that knowledge come from? Coupled with a number of bizarre bits of info, many have surmised that this knowledge came from the stars. There are books on the subject. Lots of them.

I found the movie fun, a great throwback to my childhood and a really goofy, entertaining ride.

That said, the film illustrated the problem with making another one. Ford isn’t up to (and doesn’t want to do) the stunts that made Indy famous. Listen to most of the complaints. They all (all save the Alien bits) involve Indy kid and his wild adventures. And that’s what we’d have to see more of in a 5th. Is that what you want, another film with Indy in the background of the action?

Nah. Not me. I liked going back, but like many of the return to my youth movies like Rocky Balboa and Rambo, they only serve to remind me that this is a trip we should only take once. Unless they have a KILLER script that makes the best use of an aged Indiana Jones (you know, more than just making age jokes with) I think this should have been Indy’s last ride. After all, he’ll always live in our dreams and our own adventures.

I honestly don't see how anyone could defend the complete garbage that was this movie. It's the Star Wars prequels all over again. People love it because it's shiny and new.

I think Indiana 4 was OK, I just don't think it was half good as the orginal trylogy. Some parts where cool (I actually like the fridge part) and some I hate (Like the part when they force Indy to look into the skull, or the part when hes at the grave yard and those guys attack him)
And yhe! I wouldn't mind the aliens, if they would be shown in more interesting (or lets say - spooky) way...

I loved the aliens in Indy 4. You're right saying they don't fit is just retarded.

Thank god I wasn't the only one who was okay with the Aliens. I actullay thought it was kinda cool, espicaly what happened to that Russian bitch!

As for an Indy 5, I can't say Carlyle. It would seem really cool, but at the same time, I hope they don't throw a story together for the hell of it. Maybe they shouldn't do it after the fanboy/fangirl rage about the Aliens.

Hello Carlye.
I hated the aspect of "inter dimensional beings" as Lucas called them.
If anyone watches the special features, then watch" the return of a legend".
You will see how this movie wasn't Stephen Spielberg fault but was George Lucas who made the "aliens idea and poor Stephen Spielberg didn't want to do another Indiana Jones let alone with inter dimensional beings since he was burned out from doing to many alien films in his career.
George Lucas kept at him and pestered Stephen, then got Harrison Ford to pester him as well.
George Lucas pretty much got his way with this movie as I wish he didn't after seeing the special features I mentioned.
While I do agree it was nice to see Harrison Ford do his thing. I felt the script was forced and way to generic.
I mean WTF was up with those natives coming out on the wall and ceiling?!
Did they eat, sleep, and shit in there till someone came along?!!
David Koepp who Spielberg calls his closer who has written a number of films like Jurassic park and lost world, war of the worlds which Spielberg directed. So Spielberg asked if not pleaded for his help with Indy 4.
He was the one that wrote the script for Indy 4. Lucas I think put way to much input on this.

David Koepp tries to explain how it was such a difficult balancing act to write the script for this movie.
Which became what it was today. He basically said quote. "you kind of have to approach this movie as if the others never happened, but in the back of your mind realize that the rules were laid out previously and you still have to stick by them. So, it's been a bit of a balancing act, you know."

So to get to my point. If they make Indy 5 the way they made 4. I consider that hat is already hung up and should be left alone before they screw it up even worse.

The only problem I had with wasnt the aliens but CG.Indy movies were about taking you to far off lands. I didnt fell that in the movie. But as far as age I think he could do one more. I feel he stop on top.

I agree Carlyle, the 4th one was really good, I enjoyed it... though then again, I haven't sat down and watched the original 3 in years.
Should do that today.
