Halloween is just right around the corner. This means young children and adults alike are out buying their favorite costumes. Most of these costumes come directly from horror films. If you're a horror film freak, you should know it doesn't take much to dress up as you're favorite psychopath killer. Something as simple as a mask or a glove can represent a charecter's twisted perspective. As soon as you see the symbol, you'll know where its from. Let's go through some of the most popular symbols that are used out on the streets to Trick-or-Treat, and used by film makers to scare the hell out of us.
The Jason Hockey Mask

Believe it or not, there was a time when a hockey mask didn't represent a crazy serial killer with a troubled childhood. More than half the time people see someone with a hockey mask, they instantly think about Jason Voorhees. The power of one film series has transformed this mask into an iconic horror symbol. I'm not a hockey fan, but do players even use this anymore? I doubt it, I think it scares off the children.
The Billy Puppet

If you ever see a little clown puppet riding a tricycle by itself then you'de better be ready to shed some blood. If I had saw this puppet prior to the 'Saw' films, I would have seen it as some circus prop. In just four years, this puppet has transformed itself into a major horror icon...it even has a name: 'Billy'. Symbolizing the Jigsaw killer, this doll will tell you what to do to save you're life. Halloween shops sell this costume like crazy, and as soon as you see the puppet you know what its referencing to.
The Freddy Krueger Claw

Would you rather have this claw stab through you in your dreams, or while you're awake? Well, that's not much of an option but Freddy doesn't care either way. If you saw this claw pulling open your curtain window, then you instantly know who it is. This claw is now a hot Halloween item, and its popularity and symbolism can't be ignored. From clashing with Jason's blade to killing off countless victims, these claws have raked up a huge bodycount.
The Mike Myers Mask

Can you go through a Halloween season WITHOUT seeing this mask? I never have. Mike Myers is one guy you don't want to be seeing anyway. I don't think he has a motive, even though they try to put one in the films. But hey, no motive makes him even scarier. Starting the whole "guy in a mask killing everyone in sight" trend, this mask pretty much has its place in horror film history and always will. All I want to know is how did they come up with this mask concept, looks like a mask that was still in progress and they ran with it! Can't complain though, it works and it's scary as hell.
The Scream Mask

Sure Mike Myers may have started the trend, but the Scream films really knew what to do with it. In just 10 years, this mask is globally known and is a hot product for Halloween. We all watch one to many horror films, but I don't think we're obsessive enough to go around killing people to prove a delusional point. Whether you got the original mask, the one with blood all over it, or the infamous 'Scary Movie' one where the mask is happy and high, you know where it all started: 'Scream'.
Conclusion
Our eyes can see something and instantly relate it to something else. This Halloween watch out for how many of the costumes come from horror films. I gaurantee you might see a blend of all of the above. Take care Spill family, and have a Happy Halloween.
