Members of the U.S. National Federation of the Blind (NFB) are planning to protest the release of Julianne Moore's new movie Blindness - because the film portrays the blind as "monsters".

The movie, a big-screen adaptation of Jose Saramago's 1995 book of the same name, is about a small town which is thrown into social chaos when the residents are hit by a sudden epidemic and go blind.

But the plot has angered the NFB's 50,000 members and the organisation's leaders have called for a boycott of the movie when it hits U.S. cinemas on Friday.

Marc Maurer, president of the NFB, says, "The movie portrays blind people as monsters and I believe it to be a lie.

"The Nfb condemns and deplores this film, which will do substantial harm to the blind of America and the world. Blind people in this film are portrayed as incompetent, filthy, vicious, and depraved. They are unable to do even the simplest things like dressing, bathing, and finding the bathroom.

"The truth is that blind people regularly do all of the same things that sighted people do."

The Nfb's planned boycott action has "saddened" bosses at Miramax, the studio behind the film.

In a statement, they say director Fernando Meirelles "worked diligently to preserve the intent and resonance of the acclaimed book, that is a courageous parable about the triumph of the human spirit when civilisation breaks down".

I agree with you.

This protest would only help the film and make the NFB people look (or sound) like ignorant idiots. How can they comment about a film they can't even see? Do they even know what it's about? Yes, blind people can have full, independent lives, but it takes years and years of training and experience and help. This movie is about how millions of people all over the world suddenly go blind. Do they expect entire cities of spontaneously blind people to be able to look after themselves in a matter of weeks?

In short: It's apples and oranges. DIFFERENT circumstances. FICTION. So NFB, shut the fuck up and open the eyes of your mind.

Shit like this just pisses me off. first of all it's a work of fiction, based on an epedemic that hits society, and people start going blind. If I'm right, they start taking all the people hit by the disease (or whatever it is), and putting them into camps or something of that nature to protect the public that hasn't been infected.

First of all like I said, it's a fiction...fake....not real...soley here for entertainment. People are dumb as hell.

Second, I wish I could get on stage with a mictrophone and tell all of them "YOU'RE NOT GOING TO FUCKING CHANGE A THING WITH YOUR BOYCOTT/PROTEST!!!!" The film will release, it will make money, it will come out on DVD, then soon the hype for it will die down and everyone wont even care.

Same shit that happened with the Da Vinci Code, did it work: NO! Did it work for Passion of the Christ: NO! Did it work for Tropic Thunder: NO! These films come out regardless, so why don't they stop their little bitching damn. It's not going to change a damn thing, and soon you'll be pissed off about something else anyways.

Yes, blind people can do everything we can, but what does that have to do with this film. People are so fucking dumb I swear, sorry for ranting on your blog lol, but I find protests and boycotts lik these so stupid. If you don't like the film don't fucking watch it then....wait you can't! HAHAHA...sike not funny but seriously, just stay away from it if it pisses you off.
