In what can only be called a WTF?! piece of news, Hamlet Director Kenneth Branagh is in discussions to direct Marvel's Thor.

Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige's choice of Branagh is surprising, as Branagh hasn't really directed an action-heavy film since his debut on "Henry V," a bloody telling of the British king's conquest of France.

Branagh is the latest in a string of directors -- such as Jon Favreau ("Iron Man"), Christopher Nolan (the Batman franchise) and Gavin Hood ("X-Men Origins: Wolverine") -- with arthouse roots taking on big-budget comicbook fare.

Thor will be released June 4th, 2010

Branagh may do a good job. Thor must be taken seriously for it to work and treating it in the style of a Shakespearean play, with classic tragedy and irony may do it.

So will there be an intermission in the middle of this movie too?

I am also looking forward to this, but as Claudia pointed out, this is the ___hole who directed Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. How do you screw up Frankenstein?!? He had Robert De Niro and Helena Bonham Carter to help make it work, and it was anger-inducing bad. It should have been renamed "20 Different Ways to Cry: The Anatomy of an Oscar Clip." That flick taught me that any movie that starts with a scrolled prologue about how scary it is (while also insultingly read aloud by some d-bag) is desparately trying to Jedi Mind Trick you into lowering your standards ridiculously.

That being said, Dead Again, Henry V, and Hamlet were spectacular, so I have faith. (But please don't make Thor a blithering crybaby, Ken. That would flat-out suck.)

Thor is one of my all time favorite comics..I've been looking forward to this. Kenneth Branagh is a superb actor, I hope he can translate that greatness to directing this movie.

People who say Thor is a lame character obviously haven't read the latest comics since his return it has been the most consistently awesome writing out right now.

I can an see someone like Sean Bean or Karl Urban portray Thor they both played long blonde warriors in LOTR

Whoa wait a minute I know EXACTLY who Kenneth Branagh is, even defended some of his blander movies, but you have to take into account, this is Marvel writing Marvel scripts, aimed at a broad audience. This isn't Kenneth Branagh writing a deep movie
