Variety reports that Warner Bros. has greenlited a prequel of "I am Legend", the 2007 sci-fi/drama directed by Francis Lawrence and starred by Will Smith, who will reprise his role as Robert Neville.

Tentatively the script will be penned by D.B. Weiss (who wrote the script of the upcoming movie "The Game") and it will be based on a plot outline that was developed by Mr. Smith, Mr. Lawrence, and Mr. Akiva
he wrote "Lost in Space" Goldsman. So far the prequel will deal with the last days of the human populated New York before it was overrun by the mutated, leaving Robert Neville as the sole human survivor.
There's still no word on what author
Richard Matheson thinks about this event, but like I said before, this cannot end well. "I am Legend" in itself was a very regular movie, and a prequel won't offer anything new, or at least nothing that the movie itself did not already treat. Still, is too soon to take a guess, but being part of the people who thinks that the movie went downhill as soon as that girl and that kid appeared, and that that alternative ending was not an improvement, well, I don't hold much hopes on this whole idea.
