As we all know, Tropic Thunder held up some controversy for throwing out the "r" word without remorse.
Well, big deal. It was a satirical way of looking at shamelessly played retards in movies. I laughed at the "Simple Jack" idea.
But that's not what this is about. It got me thinking about good mentally challenged characters and here's my top ten.

7) Sam Dawson: I Am Sam

Yes, he is a lovable character and it's a touching story. But I hate Dakota Fanning like no other, which hurt my movie experience

6) Arnie: What's Eating Gilbert Grape?

Leonardo DiCaprio in his youth playing the lovable, but annoying, brother of Johnny Depp. Though there were times were you just wanted to give him a big old hug, sometimes you really wanted to tell him to shut up.

5) Forrest Gump Forrest Gump

Surprised he's not number one?
He wasn't that dumb and innocent really. If they didn't mention it I wouldn't have thought he was all that retarded. And he held up a better life than most people could ever hope for, so I don't feel bad for him. Great movie though.

4) Chance the Gardener: Being There

I think this film is much too underrated. I loved this movie and Sellers' portrayal of Chance wasn't exactly as retarded as it seemed innocent. You just wanted this guy to succeed, you know? You wanted to pat him on the back. Really great film.

3) Radio: Radio

Are you gonna tell me you didn't want to give this guy a hug? When the guy is real it really hits you. Especially when he really succeeds in life. Touching film. Not the greatest, but Cuba Gooding Jr. actually did well in this.

2) Raymond Babbit: Rain Man

This was by far one of the best performances of a mentally challenged character ever done. Dustin Hoffman deserved that Oscar so much. It was a touching character in a touching story. Enough said.

1) Lennie: Of Mice and Men

That's right. The lovable, forgetful oaf Lennie. His childish character is one of the most touching things I've ever seen.

Hope you like the list. See ya.
