Tessa has every category except Indie Flicks. So here's my take on it.
Gold Medal – Son of Rambow
This movie is not only great for kids but it is great for anyone who loves film. It brings back the nostalgic feeling of the 80’s. Sure the story has been told before, but not in this light. This movie is so refreshing and brings something new and inventive to the Odd Couple story. Overall it’s 10 times better than the over cutesy films we feed to kids, it shows how kids really are. It will be out on DVD, August 26th, 2008. Check it out.
Silver Medal – Funny Games
Sure, this movie has racked up a not so good rep, but if you look at it as a horror movie without the gore or a documentary. That’s right a documentary, because this is not really a “movie, movie”. It is basically torture to the viewer as you watch this family being tortured and killed, and there’s no help for them at all. It’s basically a fancy YouTube video, if a killer videotaped himself killing a family, it has no plot development, but it’s not supposed too, it’s a sideways look at violence in films with American culture. And it does its job.The only downside is that everything happens in real time, so it gets pretty boring. Already Out On DVD.
Bronze Medal – Rocket Science
Not really a great movie, but not bad at all. It has its moments of brilliance, but it also is seriously lacking in some parts. Quick synopsis of the film: A stuttering boy joins his high school debate team to hopefully help answer some of his questions to why life is the way it is for him. The movie runs a little long. But is beautifully acted by both leads and the script is little bit more like a book than a movie, but it’s a good rental, if you’re into indie flicks, like me. Already Out On DVD.
