Its not perfect, but it is pretty good and is dying at the theater. Much better than torture porn ho-hum and remakes, it'd be nice to see this movie do well as a precedent. Stays very faithful to the short story, which is great and is what made the only other great Stephen King adaptations (besides the exception-proving-the-rule The Shining) great, and by those I mean Shawshank and Stand by Me. I've enjoyed some of his other movies but they're so frequently bad that I'm not even disappointed anymore when I don't. This is pretty basic stuff, almost like an extended Twilight Zone episode, but it's done really well and builds good suspense. If you've read the story, you might wonder how the ending would translate to a movie...well, it wouldn't really, and Darabont knew that and came up with an ending that will...well, I don't want to pull a mikdiculous here and spoil moments crucial to the enjoyment of a film, but the whole thing is pretty damn good. Some spotty CGI that kinda takes you out of the movie but there are some pretty cool effects later. I'm not Thomas Jane's biggest fan, he's kinda wooden but the situation the characters are in is so fucked up and they are obviously coming apart at the seams, so maybe it adds to the realism, kinda like those ultra-polite Kubrick conversations in 2001 and The Shining. Audience I saw it with loved it, cheered and ewwed and the appropriate moments. Andre Braugher is always great, I wish his character had been around more. LOVED the Dark Tower reference at the beginning. In my opinion, except for the original Shining, this is easily the best horror movie made from King's work. As with most movies, however, it could have used some Gary Busey.
