The X-Files: I Want To Believe
Directed By Chris Carter
Running Time 1 Hour and 40 Minutes
I wanted to believe. I wanted to believe that this movie was going to be good. I was anticipating this from it's announcement. I was a big fan of The X Files when it was on, even though I found the later seasons lacking. I loved the first theatrical film they released. It was everything an X-Files movie should've been, big, epic, compelling, and lots of aliens. The main characters were coming back for this, the creator was directing it, everything was set up for this film to be completely awesome........
WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED?!
The film takes place years after the series finale. Mulder is now a hermit, hiding in a house with Scully, now a doctor at the worst hospital ever treating a little boy with a brain thing. They are soon called back into action when two FBI agents say the charges against Mulder will be cleared once he helps them find a missing agent. The two are aided by a psychic pedophile priest who claims that god is giving him the visions. Mulder wants in on the case, but Scully is skeptic, which shakes up their relationship.
The film had tons and tons of secrecy behind it. Fake photos were revealed, the plot was under wraps, it deceived me into thinking that we were going to get something amazing. Oh, boy was I wrong. After the initial giddiness that Mulder and Scully were together again, along with some callbacks to the show, disappointment began settling in as the movie dragged onwards. The story was at first, an interesting one, thinking that it was going to be something amazing, with some great twist. But it was a big ass cop out. The plot almost goes nowhere during most of the movie, and there was a subplot that had no bearing to the film, other than to extend the running time.
The whole movie felt like an overlong episode of the series, and a bad one at that. The whole thing was dull, un-involving, and worst of all, boring as hell. I was slowly starting to hate the damn thing as it kept going. I just stopped caring around the hour mark. The climax was one of the worst things I have ever seen, I felt completely ripped off and cheated that I sat through the film for that total crapfest of a climax.
I was happy that Mulder and Scully were back again after all these years, now, I want them to go away and never come back. It was like seeing an old friend you haven't seen for a while, only to realize that the friend is a loser drunk who has nothing interesting to say.
Some Ol Bullshit!
