Hancock, the latest superhero movie starring
Will Smith, debuted this week and did better than originally anticipated. Claiming the number one spot,
Hancock made $66 Million over the weekend.
Kit Kittredge: An American Girl also premiered this week, but was stomped by
Hancock, placing at number eight, making $3.6 Million over the weekend.

Will Smith: A Real American?
The success of Will Smith’s latest production,
Hancock, is no surprise. Smith is known for having most of his film come out on or around Independence Day, all with great success.
In 2004,
I, Robot was released on July 16th, making $52.2 Million its opening weekend. In 2003,
Bad Boys II was the July release, earning $46.5 Million opening weekend.
Men in Black II came out July 2002, earning $52.1 Million its debut weekend. July 1999 brought us
Wild Wild West which earned $49.7 Million its first weekend.
Men in Black was released July 2, 1997 and earned an astounding $84.1 Million it’s debut weekend. And, of course,
Independence Day opened Independence Day weekend 1996, earning $50.2 Million.

Hancock was Will Smith’s biggest Independence Day weekend opener, so it’s no surprise that Americans bring him not only good luck, but a lot of bank.
