Music

Loading…
Music can be a great tool in enhancing a film. An over done scene of two lovers kissing in the rain can become totally watchable with the addition of music. Even a bad movie can have a good soundtrack (Grease, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, Howard the Duck, to name a few). Still, some music can be a negative aspect of the film. The music that other films have used, and used, and used to death, whether for comedic, dramatic or some other effect.

So the score is tied. It's the underdogs vs. the evil jerks. It's the last game of the season and the outcome all depends on the little guy, who wants to win it for that sick kid in the hospital. He shoots, he nearly misses, but he SCORES! The underdogs rejoice, the kid in the hospital suddenly regains full health, the douche kids angrily kick the floor, the good coach in doused in Gatorade... aaaaaaaaannnnnnnddddd cue the music!

"We Are The Champions" by Queen

Unless you haven't seen one sports film produced since 1977, then you've heard this song. Really, it was a toss up between this and We Will Rock You, but Champions wins over because it has become a cliche of sports films, along with the underdogs, the douche bag opposing team and the coach who wants nothing more than respect and the love of the hot chick. This song still rings in the ears of every jock jerk-off in sports. After winning a game, they'll recite the lyrics badly while scooping a can of celebratory illegal beer in one hand and a nameless hot girl in the other. But, I digress...

Best Use in Media: South Park episode "Stanley's Cup", as part of a twisted parody of all sports films.

It's late, it's hot and the two romantic leads are alone in a room. They start to handle each other passionatly as their lips touch each other. The girl starts to lift up her shirt while the guy unzips his pants...and cue music!

"Let's Get It On" by Marvin Gaye

Yes, the ultimate stereotypical sex song. At first I thought it would be Can't Get Enough of You're Love Baby by Barry White, but upon researching I found that Gaye's was far more cliche (Hey, that slightly rhymes!). This song was at first a passionate song of love, but turned into the soundtrack for funny love scenes (the scene in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me comes to mind). Still, the song remains as the song that plays during my sickest wet dream. Too much, right?

Best Use in Media: Jack Black's cover of the song at the end of High Fidelity.

It's a hilarious club scene. The cool guy's brought his nerdy friend to dance. The cool guy urges his friend to get out on the floor and dance. Even though he's shy at first, the nerdy kid ends up dancing in the funniest way possible...and cue music!

"Gonna Make You Sweet (Everybody Dance Now)" by C + C Music Factory

If you're comedy resorts to using this song, you know you're in trouble. This song has attempted to make unfunny songs funny, but only makes people sigh in anger and put their hands in their laps in disappointment. From it's use in an episode of Fresh Prince of Bel Air to it's use in Evan Almighty, this song is unanimous with "unfunny dance scene".

Best Use in Media: The Simpsons episode Homer's Phobia, as the theme song for a gay steel mill

2.
"There's only one thing to do at a moment like this: strut!" And cue music!

"Stayin' Alive" by Bee Gees

This is the song that killed disco. No, it wasn't "Disco Duck" by Rick Dees, it wasn't the cover of "The Star Wars Theme" by Meco, it was this. Why? Because it caused it to be too over blown, too popular and non disco fans to Hulk out and destroy a bunch of records in a stadium. The song originated, of course, from the opening sequence of the Travolta mega hit Saturday Night Fever. It was also the song that turned the falsetto voices of the Bee Gees into house hold screeches. This is yet another, much older song associated with "GOOFY DANCE SEQUENCE!" Or "GAY STRUTING SEQUENCE" if you count that what the fuck moment at the end of the horrible SNF sequel Stayin' Alive. Even though Gibb brothers can live off royalties for the rest of their lives, their souls must be crushed knowing that they allowed their song to be sped up to sound like rodents.

Best Use in Media: Airplane!. 'Nuff said.

Oh my god; we're at number one, I feel so tense. The doors are about to open. I'm sweating in awe and shock. I don't even know how to do this. Wait, I know! Ba Ba Ba...BAAAAAAA ba ba ba. BA BA BA, ba ba ba...

BA

BA

BA BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!

"Also Sprach Zarathustra" by Richard Strauss

This one is the king of all overused music. We all know it from 2001: A Space Odyssey...or from 2010...orBeing There...or Death to Smoochy...or Semi Pro. Anyway, where ever you know it from, you know it. When you need to unveil something of awesome power, this is you cliched song.

Best Use In Media: Do I NEED to say it?
