If every action movie fan around the world had one big dream where anything was possible, bullet time was always involved, hot chicks kicked ass, and superhumans could curve bullets around street corners....it'd probably be something like Wanted. This movie is every action fan's dream come true. Possibly the most amazing action sequences and visuals are in this flick. In one scene, Fox (Angelina Jolie) is leaning out of her niceass car with a gun shooting at a gunman that is chasing her from behind. Not only is she shooting with multiple guns but she is also driving with her high heeled feet. Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy) is in the passenger seat so Fox must take her right foot and hold him back, but makes sure her left foot is on the steering wheel. There's a road block up ahead. So the car does a complete flip 10 feet into the air over the roadblock, onto the side of a bus on the other side, drives along the top of the bus, and lands safetly on the road ahead. Yeah, it's that type of action movie. And it's FREAKIN SWEET!!!
What's the plot you ask? Oh c'mon does it really matter? There's curving bullets! Okay, well I guess it does matter. The story revolves around Wesley, a nobody working a typical office job. He hates his boring, pathetic life and wants a change. Well, he sure does get a change when he encounters Fox in a convenience store. From that point on, Wesley's life is changed forever. He finds out that he has abilities of a superhuman assassin just like his father. There are assassins just like him and they make up the organization called The Fraternity. The leader is named Sloan (Morgan Freeman). The Fraternity do fate's bidding by killing names that somehow appear to them in a textile factory. It's pretty far fetched; I don't want to give too much away.
What follows are some of the most exciting, visually stunning action sequences ever put in a movie. It's Matrix quality and some of the scenes give off a vibe from that movie. Not only are the action scenes great, but a lot of the movie is funny. Bekmambetov (of Daywatch and Nightwatch fame) does a fantastic job of mixing a perfect blend of mind blowing violence with humorous moments. Seeing James McAvoy scream "I'm sorrrryyyy!" as he flys over a car and shoots through a skyroof is priceless. A great thing about this film is the outstanding cast. James McAvoy is showing movie after movie that he is the next big star. After his moving performance in Atonement, he shows a completely different side. He is a great leading man and does a good job of narrarating his life which introduces us to his character. A lot of people just think Angelina Jolie's a pretty face that's married to Brad Pitt but she's a great actress. Fox isn't a very deep character but Jolie does a great job portraying her as the expert assassin that she is. Morgan Freeman also gives an interesting turn as Sloan. It seems he's left his bucket list behind because this guy isn't the lovable narrarator we all know.
The only problem I can think of are some of the transitions between scenes. At one point Wesley is on top of a train and the next he's in a hot bath. But that's just a minor complaint and it doesn't affect the experience of the movie. To sum it up, Wanted is one of the best action flicks I've ever seen. It's also one of the best times I've had in the theater. The movie doesn't hold anything back and it sure blew my mind wide open. I can't imagine a fan of action movies not enjoying it, since this is all I want out of an action flick. It starts great, ends great, and you'll leave the theater satisfied saying to yourself HOLY SHIT THAT WAS AWESOME!!!
