Have you ever been to a place so drab, so boring, that you’d rather watch “Meet the Spartans” while attempting to take your own life, than be there. Well, if you answered no, than I may have just the place for you, Bruges… it’s in Belgium as the films characters frequently remind you. The films centers around two hit men Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson) both of whom are coming off of a hit gone wrong. The are forced by there boss, Harry (Ralph Fiennes) to hide out in the quaint, little fairy tale-like city of Bruges, until he gives them further notice. Where as Ken tries to make the best of the situation, Ray decides to shit on everything and everyone.

The things Farrell’s character says are crude and unapologetic, but the funny thing is, he truly sees nothing wrong with the things he’s saying, this is one of many great character arcs that makes for the films many funnier moments. Although there’s a bevy of comedy here, the film isn’t necessarily a full on comedy, there are way to many dark elements for that, it’s more of a black Dramedy than anything else, and although I felt it did a poor job of blending the comedy with the drama at times, the films outstanding characters are just to much fun to watch. I found there was a lot more tension in the movie than it was suppose to be simply because you get so caught up in the characters, you find yourself worrying about what could happen to them. The closest film I can think of that resembles the tone of this one is (my personally favorite) “Fargo”, only a lot darker. This is both the films upside and downside.

But hell, I dug the shit out of this movie and granted it’s not for everybody, but if it’s for you, you won’t be disappointed.

THE EXTRAS: Deleted and Extended Scenes, Gag Reel (5:59), When in Bruges :Making of (13:48), Strange Bruges: Extension of Making of (7:28), A Boat Trip Around Bruges: Featurette about the City of Bruges (5:42), F**king Bruges: F-Bomb Montage (1:38)
All solid DVD extras although none stand out and the F**king Bruges montage is pointless.

FINAL VERDICT:

WORTH WATCHING
