Dexter Asks:Hey Carlyle, I'm starting to see a lots trailers for the new R rated flick "m Night Shamalan presents a film by m Night Shamalan.... The Happening" I think they would do better to keep his name off the trailer. Any way at first I thought this movie was about the religious notion of the Rapture and that could be a cool movie plot. However I just saw the actual plot on imdb and man it sounds stupid and potentially environmentally preachy. I dont want to spoil it so look on the imdp page under plot synopsis if you want. Anyway, my question is are you wanting to see "The Happening", or does M.Night's name turn you away from the film?
Well, I'll tell you Dexter. M. Night Shyamalan has lost his damned fool mind. Between his gigantic falling out with Disney which included him writing a scathing book about their inability to understand his unique and genius vision that was The Lady in the Water, and his constant adherence to a formula that worked really well once - Shyamalan is a director you have to be very careful about.
I know a guy like this. Incredibly talented, but so absorbed in his own genius that he won't listen to reason. No one understands. But they will when they see his latest creation. Which fails in exactly all the ways everyone was warning him it would. Extraordinarily frustrating. Add to that the fact that the guy has to put himself front and center every chance he gets. He doesn't like commentaries. Instead he films segments in which he stands in front of the camera and explains to you everything you are about to watch. And can we talk about his ever increasing penchant for increasing the size of his role in his own movies, first starting with a cameo in The Sixth Sense, then another in Unbreakable, then a pivotal role in Signs, the big kicker twist revealer in The Village and finally...the hero of the #$%*ing movie in The Lady in the Water. Get this, he was the WRITER WHO MUST SAVE THE WORLD THROUGH HIS GENIUS AND SACRIFICE. OMG hes a jeenius!!1!
Yeah. Daydream about being Christ much?
In fact, I'm surprised the new film isn't called M. Night Shyamalan's M. Night Shyamalan, about the trials and tribulations of a young, misunderstood boy named M. Night Shyamalan who falls in love with a beautiful young princess named M. Night Shyamalan who is mysteriously kidnapped by the evil, mad, yet brilliant and devilishly handsome M. Night Shyamalan for reasons unknown. And it all ends in a big twist ending involving sex between the three leads. Yeah. that's the movie I was expecting.
Instead its something about everyone mysteriously catching a cold that makes them kill themselves. And it's called M. Night Shyamalan presents a film by M. Night Shyamalan The Happening. And the truth is, as crazy and megalomaniacal as the guy is...he's still made a couple of really great ones. Hell, even despite how crazy insane the last one was - I loved watching it for the good bits and just how crazy he got. And you know I'm gonna #%*&ing watch it.
At this point, the guy is like Prince. You know that whatever he comes to the table with will either be dancable genius...or unending dribble we'll make fun of him for until he wows us again. But personally, I can't wait to see this...just so he can make the sequel we'll all be waiting for...
To be fair to M. Night Shyamalan's M. Night Shyamalan, he didn't write the book nor was it written in response to his falling out with Disney. He just hired a biographer to follow him around and take notes on his every fart while the Disney stuff happened to be going on. Moreover, Shyamalan comes off pretty much the same in the book as he did in this post: too whiny and self-centered to know he's the butt of the joke.
Zombies in a kindergarden? Watch out MDS, some Hollywood suit might actually pick that idea, and God, how much I wish I was just joking, but knowing the greedy machine, is possible that it could actually happen.
I still have a sick curiosity to see what he does to the Smurfs....And I truely believe that he is the only one who can do that movie, as he is the only person egotistical in his own ability enough other than Kevin Costner who will try to spin three movies out of blue straw.
