Wesley Snipes sentenced to THREE YEARS in prison!! WTF??

On Feb. 1 a jury found Wesley Snipes guilty of three misdemeanor counts of willfully failing to file tax returns, but acquitted him of the more serious felony conspiracy and tax fraud charges and three additional counts of failure to file. The sentencing came at the end of a daylong hearing in which lawyers for Snipes argued for leniency while federal prosecutors sought the maximum penalty possible.

On Thursday the sentence was handed down by Judge William Terrell Hodges of Federal District Courts for Snipes to spend three years in prison for willfully failing to file tax returns. One year for each count, to be served consecutively, and an additional year of probation.

DAAAAAAAYYYYYYYUUUUUMMMNN!!!!

In a prepared statement, Wesley Snipes said: “I’m very sorry for my mistakes. I acknowledge that I have failed myself and others.” But in the statement, which ran to nearly 10 minutes, he never mentioned the words “tax” or “taxes.”
Judge Hodges allowed Wesley Snipes to remain free on bond until summoned by either the United States Marshals Service or the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Hopefully during this time Wesley Snipes can pull one of those daring escapes like he did in U.S. Marshals. If not, well, maybe he'll finally get to have that boxing match with Ving Rhames

or *ulp* he may end up having to break out one of his older outfits.

The case was the most prominent tax prosecution since Leona Helmsley was convicted of tax fraud in 1989. Snipes must pay up to $17 million in back taxes plus penalties and interest. He tried to make a down payment on his taxes before sentencing; his legal team offered Judge Hodges three checks totaling $5 million. Judge Hodges refused the checks, saying he did not have the authority to accept them. Prosecutors also declined to accept the checks. An Internal Revenue Service employee eventually accepted the checks on behalf of the Treasury Department.

Oooooohh. Looks like the I.R.S is being all hardcore. Wanted to make an example Wesley Snipes to let us know there will be NO preferential treatment. If you owe them money they will throw your ass in jail, even if you are a celebrity.

Oh, thanks for reminding me, Willie. I meant...even if you are a non-white celebrity.

he's not going to prison for not paying his taxes. he's going for failure to file. There are plenty of people who win against the gov. plus is wesley an individual or a corporation? yes that matters. if wesley snipes inc didnt pat then they could get hime for that . I think he paid all of his business taxes . but he got bad advice on filing personal taxes.

Leona Helmsley is white and did four years for tax evasion. Richard Hatch from "Survivor" is white and got sentenced to 51 months in jail and three years probation. Spiro Agnew got three years probation. Heidi Fleiss did three years in prison. Dennis Kozlowski, the former CEO of Tyco is doing 25 years in prison. Conversely, Richard Pryor only did 10 days in jail for tax evasion and Don King was acquitted of his charges. And, while Willie Nelson didn't do any jail time, he did have to pay $16.7 million. Ouch! Wesley Snipes isn't going to prison because he's black. He's going to prison because he didn't pay his taxes for six years. The IRS doesn't give a fuck who you are. If you owe them money, they're going to get it. Celebrities literally get away with murder in our country, both white (Phil Spector) and black (O.J. Simpson) and the few times one actually has to pay the piper (or the IRS) is cause for celebration.

I mean really, he could have got some better advise. Like "Pay your taxes, or they WILL lock your black ass up" Just a thought.

Amendment XVI

(Ratified February 3, 1913)

The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration.

Spout all the nonsense you want, the taxation of income in this country is backed up by the law of the land. Every single court case challenging it has been struck down.

I agree that they came down waaay too hard on him, and that's probably because he's black, but that doesn't change the fact that if he'd filed a return, he wouldn't be going to prison.

that's a good one about the match with Ving Rhames. Blackman + No taxes = sitting in the slammer with a big heavy hammer
