MiniReview: Sukiyaki Western Django (2007) - Takashi Miike

Just a very quick review:

I was curious when they announced Miike's new movie "Sukiyaki Western Django" would be part of this year's Fantasy Film Fest Nights.
Not having seen too many of his films, I didn't have any expectations, either. I had seen the trailer online and it looked like "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly" set in medieval Japan. A Western set in Japan? Quentin Tarantino part of the cast? Like I said, it made me curious...

This movie looked amazing. It has lots of poetic images and a very artistic (yes, artistic) style to it. Then there's all the blood and violence we've gotten used to seeing in Miike's movies.

Despite the violence it doesn't take itself all too seriously. In fact SWD was more a comedy than anything else. Tarantino especially contributed some of the funniest scenes I've seen in a film this year.
This is a japanese film, but it was shot in english. It's fun to watch all these japanese actors struggle through their lines. I doubt they had any idea what they were saying!

The only thing I that disappointed me was the plot. It's rather boring and the movie itself is just waaay too long.

All in all, a good movie. No masterpiece, though...

It is. It has some really slow parts though.

I see this as Takeshi Miike's attempt at being post-modern. I wanna see it now as it may be the 'Shoot 'Em Up' of Japan! Sounds like a barrel of fun!
