I just watched 3:10 to Yuma- one of the best westerns I have ever seen. I'm usually not too big of a fan of westerns- my fav is The Big Country starring Gregory Peck which is mostly about the clashing cultures of the Eastern and Western U.S.
(Retired, wealthy sea Captain Jame McKay (Gregory Peck) arrives in the vast expanse of the West to marry fiancée Pat Terrill (Carroll Baker). McKay is a man whose values & approach to life are a mystery to the ranchers & ranch foreman Steve Leech (Charlton Heston) takes an immediate dislike to him. Pat is spoiled, selfish & controlled by her wealthy father, Major Henry Terrill (Charles Bickford). The Major is involved in a ruthless civil war, over watering rights for cattle, with a rough hewn clan led by Rufus Hannassey (Burl Ives). The land in question is owned by Julie Maragon (Jean Simmons) & both Terrill & Hannassey want it.)

Anyway, I just wanted to voice my opinion that if all westerns were like 3:10 to Yuma, I would always be watching them.

Okay, so there were some hoky aspects to the film, but all in all, one of the best I've seen this year. Russel Crowe and Christian Bale are absolutely phenomenal.

Actually, now that I think of it, Young Guns is another one of my favorite movies ever and its a western.

I also recommend Open Range. Best Costner film since Dances with Wolves.

I'm a fan of a lot of old-school westerns, John Wayne in particular. The Man who shot Liberty Valance is a great movie even from outside of the Western storytelling device. Unforgiven is also a truly outstanding film.

I really like Robert Duvall and Kevin Costner, so I'll definitely look into it. That is sad about Michael Jeter.

Thanks!
