OK so I am an avid reader and movie goer. And there is nothing I despise more than a bad movie remake of a perfectly good book. I'll give you an example (now boys, I know most of ya'll prolly didn't read this series but bear with me); the traveling pants series. Now, I must admit that when the first book came out, I started reading it and I finished it in one night- just stayed up from 6 pm to 7 am and I was absolutely enthralled with it. So, even though I didn't expect much from the film, I still went to go see it with some high hopes. BAD. so bad. there was absolutely no creativity on the movie makers' part. I'm no professional movie critic, but even I can spot a lack of effort. It's like they made the movie just for the 12 year olds and the parents they dragged along- granted that's where the money is, but c'mon! At least try for those of us who still read below age level! :oP
Well, anyway, another piece of chick lit turned into a piece of chicken shit in the theatres was the virgin suicides. i basically have the same things to say- no creativity, no effort, no good.

I bring this up because two of my favorite books have/will be made into movies- the kite runner, which i have yet to see; and the other boelyn girl. Both books were amazing and I'm hoping the movies won't ruin it again for me.

What do you all think?

Some other books being turned into movies

The Road - Cormac McCarthy (the same guy that wrote No Country For Old Men - I just finished this) - due out Thanksgiving
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - F. Scott Fitzgerald short story - due out December 19 - David Fincher directing
Blood Meridian - Cormac McCarthy - due out sometime in 2009 - Ridley Scott directing
Rendezvous with Rama - Arthur C Clarke (I'm reading this now) - due out sometime in 2009 - David Fincher directing
And of course del Toro has started The Hobbit for 2011

That's all the ones I can think of right now.

Update: the Other Boelyn Girl was not good at all. They switched the focus from Mary, the main character in the book, to Ann. But, the novel was extremely long, so they had to cut a lot and therefore change a lot of the plot... still, ick.

i never read I, Robot but I liked the movie- and I did read the Chronicles of Narnia, i was happy with the movie as well. I want to read and watch Atonement and see how they do with that.

I didn't know Jumper was based on a book, cool, I will have to look for it

You could say the same about I, Robot and I Am Legend, both with Will Smith. Okay I thought the book of I, Robot was maybe a little slow, but I Am Legend was much better in book form I thought.

The upcoming "Jumper" is based on a 'young adult' novel by Stephen Gould. I may check it out for a quick read.

I am a big film and novel lover too.

The first two Harry Potter movies were pretty good at staying true to the books. After that they are putting too little details into the movies. My family and I were not at all impressed with the last one (the clothing for one thing looked like it was taken from the last bin of a thrift store).

I'm a big fan of the Chronicles of Narnia series. Although the river scene in "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" wasn't in the book, the rest of it was really well done. I am so glad that they are doing a good job making the series (I guess it helps to have C.S. Lewis' stepson involved in the process). I hope they will keep up the good work.
