If it's crap... We'll tell you

Moxie

5 reasons why the prequels were awesome and the rest of you can fuck off

Yes i'm talking about those prequels

Much to the chagrin of everyone around me i managed to spend the last 20 something years never having seen Star Wars. This past 4th, determined to avoid suffering through the legions of tourist by heading into D.C, i slyly suggested a Star Wars marathon to my,secretly the the biggest geek in the world, best friend. So we picked up a pint of ice cream (like a pair of girls who had just been dumped) and stared with episode 4. Despite having to keep him for spoiling every little thing i didn’t already know about Star Wars from growing up in a culture that fell in love with it long before i was born, i enjoyed it.
He of course was fascinated by all things ship like and sci-fi but i have to say the thing that made me dig Star Wars was the philosophy behind it. I loved the almost capitalism v/s communism philosophy of the "force" (yea thats how my mind works). The religion v/s atheism aspect of the whole thing. Pacifism v/s...v/s...well whatever the opposite of pacifism is. Oh and of course i loved that Leia wasn’t some weak, dumb, eye candy, princess (she spent an entire movie flopping around braless and i still dug her by the end), so props to Lucas for writing a woman on screen that doesn’t make me want to choke the writer with a pair of Gloria Steinem’s panties (to far?).
But its because i liked all those things that something many of you may find terrible dawned on me.Why exactly do yall hate the prequels so much?
I'm not stupid, i noticed all the annoying, why is this here?, Why did this even happen?, Fuck Jarjar binks bull shit but you guys don’t just dislike the prequels you hate them. Manny even go so far as to refuse to accept there existence. But without the prequels it is not the same movie series. Yes they were writhe with flaws but i am glad a watched them.
So i present you with 5 reason the prequels were awesome and the rest of you can fuck off

5) Samuel L. Jackson
Sammy Jack makes everything better and if you dont believe me you obviously missed the cinematic experience of Snakes On A fucking Plane!
No need to point out the on screen defecation The Spirit i am currently in the process of erasing that film from my memory. BUT his presence did save that movie from being one of my worst movies of all time (i only give that title to two films so thats saying alot).
Oh yea and he was a Jedi with a purple light saber!

4) Fight Scenes!
Ok i know it was the 70s/80s but the light saber fight scenes in the old Star Wars flicks left something to be desired. Namely how obviously and painfully choreographed they looked. I am not holding this against the originals but letting technology catch up a bit made the fight scene in the prequels drool worthy awesome. As someone who had never seen the movies I was looking forward to the light saber battles the most, in the originals it was a letdown. The prequels redeemed them.

3)OBI WON!
Ok so i want everyone to think back to the first time they saw Star Wars, understand my perspective a bit. Obi Won is my best friend’s favorite character and after seeing him die in the first movie i...well lets just say my comments pissed him off. But that changed when i saw the prequels, suddenly he went from "I'm here, i'm important accept it! Ops i'm dead..." to holy samurai batman Obi Won is awesome!

2) Yoda
Ahhh Yoda, even before i saw the movies i knew i'd would love him. His small and greenness, the talking in riddles (of sorts) and watching the films only sealed that. But of course Yoda dies too before you ever get to see (with your own eyes) why he deserves all the respect everyone give him. The opportunity to see Yoda fight, on its own was enough to make me glad they made the prequels

1) Darth Vader/Anakin
He's what sold me on the films, he's the character I identified with the most. His reasons for turning "bad" made sense to me. The truly amazing thing about him was he did the impossible, he broke from the dark side. Even if there was alot of stupid shit going on in the movies themselves, i am glad they exist and i'm glad i watched them.
Without the prequels the series is just the adventures of Luke Skywalker and company. WITH the prequels you realize what who the series is really about, Anakin Skywalker aka Darth Vader. Without the prequels Vader is just the brute. The analogy that comes to mind is Vader is a bit like the big guy that stands next to the “Don” in gangsta films. He does all the dirty work for an even more sinister fellow than he. Before I saw the prequels I was a bit disappointed in the big bad Darth Vader. He had been hyped up so much as being one of the best villains of all time. But all the while I was thinking, a true villain answers to no one but himself, bad ass he is not. Then came the prequels and it all made sense, I understood his motivation, why even though he was on the “bad side” he was never quite truly evil.
The point is Vader is the real star of the series, the driving force (tehehe pun intended). HE is what made Star Wars awesome.
Hands down my favorite charater.

Moxie.

I have no idea what you are talking about. No one mentioned kents blog in anyway.

Xerxes, I didnt mention the comics in order of a research role but more of a comparison between what is a good story line and what was done with the prequels.

And there is no way I am even going to bring up anything kent says about this.

To me, the prequels were weakly directed but polished quasi-epics. They are great to look at but leave very little to the imagination of a real universe that may have existed a long long time ago in a galaxy far away.

However, saying that it did expand the notion of six-degrees of separation for a population of the earth... to 2-degrees of separation for the entire universe.

And another thing, Moxie never said that the prequels were better than the originals, her point was only to prove they were important....sheeesh you guys!!!!

Also PS - Moxie is beautiful.

Did you seriously just bring up LINK TO Kent to on my blog's comments section?
I was gonna respond to you Sept.8 comment honestly but i am to distracted by the impertinence.
(i didn't even noticed people started commenting on this again)

AND for the 10th F'n time! I never said the prequels were better than the originals (my favorite of the seris was actually The Empire Strikes Back). My point was only to prove they were important, necessary, and entertaining. Without the prequels i would not honestly be able to call myself a fan of the series.

Finally, someone who likes the Star Wars prequels as much as I do. It seems like everyone on this site hates them with a passion. To all the haters on this site, come on, those films are actually pretty damn good. I would even say that they are on par with the original trilogy. Nice blog Moxie.

Yeah, I agree with Travis. While I actually enjoy the prequels I'd never say they were better than any of the originals. While there is some truth to what you said about people reacting too harshly to new sequels, that first statement is something I can not agree with.

wow! I knew some folks liked the prequels but i wasn't aware that anyone actually thought they were better than STARWARS and EMPIRE!? I'll give you Return of The Jedi, but come on!
Give me dark, evil, mysterious Darth Vader anyday over completely explained, Whiny, Nnooooo! vader.
Why am I even debating this?

Also, to respond to Andrew, if I have to grab a comic in order to understand a film, it's not worth my time to watch. That's just MY opinion so don't take offense to that. I just don't like the notion of having to research a film in order to see its value; it should already be there on the screen.

I agree that the prequels were overall better films, but the fact remains is that you will never convince people who grew up with Star Wars of this. I didn't grow up with Star Wars, So I didn't care at all for episodes 4, 5, and 6. God, to me 6 was a effing nightmare. To be blunt, there is a good reason George Lucas dislikes a huge number of his fans and just does what he wants.

People hated the new Indiana Jones film too, and it was exactly like the other three. People just think by bringing back a classic it's somehow destroying the original films and.. well it's not.

woah... Okay Im a bit late on this debate... but I have to disagree with you as perfect as you are... The prequels totally changed what the originals were all about... To me the originals provided an ever expanding universe in which there is a reason for an empire that is taking away liberties and the embodiment of imperialism... but when the prequels came out they narrowed down the universe to happy meal selection of planets and characters... Everyone some how is tied to everyone else and there are only like 4 planets that we see... the robots are stupid, and instead of anakin being a deep and compelling character I found him shallow and just seemed like a whiny little boy who only could take out Samual L Jackson with the old "hey look over there...oops cut off your hand" routine.

I am however one of the people who dont actually hate the prequels but I love talking about what is wrong with it. This is a case in point that if you read the comics you can tell where this series should have gone. I thought the visuals were amazing and I liked how the emperor was manipulating both sides against the middle.

What kept me going liking the prequels most is the metaphysical connoctations that someone told me once and it seemed to make sense, in that Anakin was not born of a virgin birth, but instead it was the dark-side /slash emperor who was his father... and manipulated events because he has forseen it... and also the whole phantom menace = china/tibet thing.

But long story short...grab a couple star wars comics - I like the crimson empire personally... and see how it should be.

Anakin should have been played as a cross between Han Solo and Michael Corleone. Charming and scoundrelly, so that we're seduced by him the way Padme should have been and intense, so that we believe his turn. Like I said, Shakespeare in space.
