Jonathan AKA JodeneSparks posted a statusGreetings Spill Members! (Insert cheesy "HALLELUJAH!" theme here)
Well, it took a great deal of sweat (digital), blood (metaphorical) and tears (....no comment), but your requests, numerous lists, and a bit of my own preferences have finally finished one year-long, 420-film calendar of classic cinema for 2011!
(Noise of rousing standing ovation can be heard)...No, please...thank you, thank you very much...
Don't worry, I am just kidding, guys.
In all seriousness, I want to thank everyone involved. Dozens and dozens of Spill members gave me hundreds of requests, and this would be nowhere near complete without them. I did what I could to add something that would please everyone who gave me ideas, but tough choices had to be made. So before I give my list and you all post your comments and (hopefully few) criticisms below, I have a couple points to add:
1. There are a number of points on this lists where you will see two films put together. Those will be CINE-DUEL days (name needs work), where two similar films will be compared (and often, one will be declared superior). This was done under one of two circumstances: 1) It gave a chance for me to show more perspective on two films that may often be grouped together, or may just not be distinct enough for their own day, and 2) Put more simply, sometimes I did not have enough room otherwise. There were points where I'd have 12 movies for a 10-film category, and I just could not see myself losing any of them. Consider this a "cheap-ish fix".
2. I am not by any means perfect in choosing worthy candidates, in spite of my efforts to become so through my efforts on this list. If a candidate is pointed out to me that is more deserving of recognition as a "classic film", I am more than willing to change it before the end of the month. The italicized and underlined choices at the bottom of each category are the ones most uncertain to me right now, and most liable to be changed. So even now, suggest away!
3. I could not let any one studio or franchise take over a category, for the sake of variety. Sorry PIXAR, you deserve a half dozen spots on this list, but I need to be fair to other studios as well.
4. Sometimes, in order to make room for everything, a film that might normally be fitted into one category was put in another instead (e.g. "The Fly" under Monster, or "Trainspotting" under Popular). So don't freak out if your favorite film looks like it's not here, it just might be hidden elsewhere!
5. Not every film on here is chosen because it is universally beloved, and some genres do have more attention than others. I sometimes chose films that I think would attract attention, pique interest, spark debate, or simply give me something fun to review. My ultimate purpose, however, is to try to create as much variety as possible, go for some goofy fun at some times and thought-provoking moments at others, and do as much as I can to reveal new films to as many people as possible. Some great choices did not make the cut for this reason.
6. You will notice 5 blank spots underneath "Guilty Pleasures/Special Requests", which are reserved for the big five animated dudes themselves. Hopefully, Korey, Cyrus, Leon, Co-Host and Carlyle can each pick out one film they want to see done that's not on here. If they don't have any particular ones in mind, we'll do something fun with them later on....Maybe we can have the Spill community pick the films for them!
And most of all, everyone, I am not going to ever present myself as the perfect critic. I may miss some major points in a film, some posts may be better laid-out than others, and it may take me less time to say what I have to say about one movie than another. Put simply, I am always looking to improve; so if any criticism of my work is warrented, making it corteous and constructive would be well-appreciated. So with all that said, read below, enjoy, and let me know what you all think.
