The coming of the new year brings with it the strange, garish tradition that we call The Academy Awards. It's that time of year when celebrities wander out of their palatial caves for a giant pageant wherein they pretend they don't want the gold statues for which they are competing with their colleagues. I'm just being ornery of course, the Oscars are a grand institution within Hollywood and many, many people look forward each year to not only the awards themselves, but also to the announcement of the nominations. Today, that announcement has been made. So without further ado, here are some of the artists nominated this year....

For a complete list of categories and nominees, feel free to hop over to the official Academy Awards website. The two big snubs this year appear to be 'Moonrise Kingdom' and 'The Master.' True, 'The Master' did get nods in performance categories, but Paul Thomas Anderson was not nominated for Best Director and it appears the Academy thought it better to leave a Best Picture slot empty rather than nominate either 'Master' or 'Moonrise.' And yet honestly, the biggest oversight for both of those films, in my humble opinion, is in the cinematography category. I wasn't over the moon for either film, but the one thing that was impossible to ignore was how immaculately each was shot. Well, it's that time again. Bring on the discussion, the debate, the screaming, and the running. Sorry, went a little Goldblum there.

The 85th Annual Academy Awards will be broadcast February 24th on ABC starting at 7pm Eastern. Also, don't forget to tune into Spill on that night for our live Oscar stream.

NO DARK KNIGHT RISES?! Okay, just kidding, I don't mind that movie to not be nominated for the Oscars, I mean, after all, it's not perfect.

I hope Benh Zeitlin wins Best Director. All the other nominees are veteran filmmakers and I don't think any of the other nominees took as many risks as Zeitlin. I mean, having a 9-year old girl as your main character, a cast of unknown actors, etc. If Spielberg or Russel win this award I'm gonna be pissed.

@SpaceMan
I think Shirley Temple won at an even younger age already

The real nest pic nominations are the same as the best directing noms. Can I a movie REALLY win an oscar for best picture if it is not considered to have arguably the best directing?

Really would have liked Premium Rush to be somewhere up there!

I'm glad to see Beasts of the Southern Wild on the list. Really great movie. As for Best Actress, I'm actually hoping Quvenzhane Wallis get's it. I mean, any adult can act their butt off no problem. But for a kid? A nine year old kid at that, to pull off some of the convincing acting she did? They truly need to give that little girl an Oscar. Not only that, but they would set history too. She'd be the youngest person ever to receive an Oscar. Actually makes watching the awards this year interesting to be honest.

Is it just me or did anyone think that Seth MacFarlane will do a poor job hosting the Oscars He and Emma Stone were pretty bad at the nomination announcements.
