The coming of the new year brings with it the strange, garish tradition that we call The Academy Awards. It's that time of year when celebrities wander out of their palatial caves for a giant pageant wherein they pretend they don't want the gold statues for which they are competing with their colleagues. I'm just being ornery of course, the Oscars are a grand institution within Hollywood and many, many people look forward each year to not only the awards themselves, but also to the announcement of the nominations. For a complete list of categories and nominees, feel free to hop over to the official Academy Awards website. The two big snubs this year appear to be 'Moonrise Kingdom' and 'The Master.' True, 'The Master' did get nods in performance categories, but Paul Thomas Anderson was not nominated for Best Director and it appears the Academy thought it better to leave a Best Picture slot empty rather than nominate either 'Master' or 'Moonrise.' And yet honestly, the biggest oversight for both of those films, in my humble opinion, is in the cinematography category. I wasn't over the moon for either film, but the one thing that was impossible to ignore was how immaculately each was shot. Well, it's that time again. Bring on the discussion, the debate, the screaming, and the running. Sorry, went a little Goldblum there.
The 85th Annual Academy Awards will be broadcast February 24th on ABC starting at 7pm Eastern. Also, don't forget to tune into Spill on that night for our live Oscar stream.

Comment by Alex Lovendahl on January 15, 2013 at 3:18pm Biggest snub for me is still putting Alan Arkin in for Best Supporting Actor over the following:
-Jason Clarke in Zero Dark Thirty
-Michael Fassbender in Prometheus (who is pretty much the only thing people can agree is good in that film, apart from maybe the cinematography)
-Samuel L. Jackson in Django Unchained (who I'd actually take over Waltz, but w/e)
-Tom Hardy in The Dark Knight Rises (though I definitely didn't expect that to happen)
-Javier Bardem in Skyfall (again, didn't expect it, but he was special in a way Arkin wasn't)
-Dwight Henry in Beasts of the Southern Wild (who I honestly thought was better than Hushpuppy)
-Mark Ruffalo in The Avengers (for turning the least interesting Avenger into the most compelling to watch)
Do I think most of these people would have a shot at winning the award? No, probably not; Fassbender, Henry, Clarke, and Jackson would be the ones with the best shot, and I doubt Henry appeals to most people as much as he does to me. But, good God, give me any of them over Arkin just playing himself again.
Most of the other nominations make sense to me. While I'd have liked to see a tenth film mentioned for Skyfall, Moonrise Kingdom, or The Grey (okay, I know, not in a million years) I get it, and I don't think any of them would have had a shot at winning, so it's fine. And I think I know what happened with Bigelow/Affleck for Director; they probably split each others' votes for making incredibly similar films, both of which are pretty incredible.
Comment by Obscene Otter on January 15, 2013 at 3:05pm @Plikis, original score being a meaningless award is your opinion, that's actually one of the awards I look forward to the most.
And because every Zero Dark Thirty nomination is undeserved.
Comment by Thomas Christopher White on January 15, 2013 at 2:23pm what? no Affleck for best director and no Javier Bardem for best supporting?
Comment by Plikis on January 13, 2013 at 4:16am The only one I can conceive of would be the original score, even though I wouldn't much agree with it. Sound editing? Two words for you - Bane's voice.
Regardless, these are two of the most meaningless oscars they give out. If you're seriously butthurt over TDKR not getting these two, I have to think it's because you're just a fan who wants it to get SOMETHING, even if that something is largely irrelevant to the quality of the film.
Comment by J on January 12, 2013 at 11:47pm @Plikis The Dark Knight Rises shouldve been nominated for at least sound editing/mixing and best original score
Comment by Plikis on January 12, 2013 at 6:01pm Did anyone really think Dark Knight Rises should get a nomination? Why the fuck would that happen?
Comment by The Laughing Man on January 11, 2013 at 4:06pm Why do people even get pissed off over the Oscars? No one cares the day after.

Comment by Tommy McGrew on January 11, 2013 at 11:52am Personally I'm loving this stable of nominees. My favorite movie this year (Silver Linings Playbook) was nominated in every major category and my second fav of the year (Beasts of the Southern Wild) have a best pic, best actress nods and Django, which I liked but didn't exactly love has a few minor nods only one of which is deserved (Waltz) so I'm fuckin' thrilled, I think they got it right this year...go figure.
Comment by Bat21 on January 11, 2013 at 11:35am Shirley Temple received an honorary, teeny-tiny Oscar. She never won.
