Honestly, at this point I think it's pretty well established that the Oscars are going to overlook handfuls of artists who truly deserve recognition each and every year. Not only that, but it's also an exceedingly subjective discussion in the first place. The two omissions I will mention that strike me right off the bat are Trent Reznor for Best Original Score on 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' and Michael Shannon for Best Actor in 'Take Shelter.' I realize that Reznor just won last year for his work on 'The Social Network,' but that should not exclude him from at least being nominated for his latest phenomenal score. As for Michael Shannon, his performance in 'Take Shelter' was so powerful, so densely layered and emotionally leveling, that I am at a complete loss to understand how both the Golden Globes and the Oscars could ignore it. I am glad to see 'Bullhead' nominated for Best Foreign Film. This Belgian crime drama was a big hit at last year's Fantastic Fest and very much deserves this honor. But that's about all the mileage we can get out of my two cents, we want to know what you guys think. Are there any of your favorite films, performers, artists from last year missing from the list?

Comment by Jason on January 26, 2012 at 3:01am

The only nominations for Original Score that were deserved was John Williams War Horse and Bource's for The Artist, other than that it SHOULD'VE been:
Powell and Zimmer - Kung Fu Panda 2 (Just go listen to "Po Finds the Truth" and tell me that shouldn't be recognized on its own)
Giacchino - 50/50
Giacchino - Super 8 (yes, he should've gotten two nominations)

My annual will win/should win predictions list:
KEY:
should win= 0
Will win = X
Actor in a Leading Role

Demián Bichir in "A Better Life"
George Clooney in "The Descendants"X-could pull an unfair slide
Jean Dujardin in "The Artist" XXXXXX0000000 He will win the best actor award because He has been for a while. The only thing that gives me a doubt about this one is that he actually deserves the oscar. And that means that he might not get it.
Gary Oldman in "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy"000000 -Gotta love Gordon. Congrats, for prooving all award shows wrong, Oscars. I felt certain you were gonna get snubbed.
Brad Pitt in "Moneyball"
Actor in a Supporting Role

Kenneth Branagh in "My Week with Marilyn"
Jonah Hill in "Moneyball"
Nick Nolte in "Warrior"
Christopher Plummer in "Beginners" XXXXXXX0000000 He's just funny as hell.
Max von Sydow in "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" 0000 Maybe the only part of this movie that deserved its nomination.
Actress in a Leading Role

Glenn Close in "Albert Nobbs"
Viola Davis in "The Help" X0000000- This is the best bet of an alternate winner. She could pull ahead from Meryl Streep. And besides, not only was she awesome in this, but she's friend's with Meryl Streep. A lot of women who are friends with Streep won the gold after competing with Streep.
Rooney Mara in "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" 00000000000000000000 She's f**king Lisbeth Salander.
Meryl Streep in "The Iron Lady" XXXXXXXXX Meryl Streep will win it, but I want her to be remembered as the awesome actress from awesome movies. Not for washing shit stains like The Iron Lady.
Michelle Williams in "My Week with Marilyn" X0000000000 another alternate. But Williams has more of an awards advantage.
Actress in a Supporting Role

Bérénice Bejo in "The Artist"
Jessica Chastain in "The Help"
Melissa McCarthy in "Bridesmaids" Congrats.
Janet McTeer in "Albert Nobbs"
Octavia Spencer in "The Help" XXXXXX000000
Animated Feature Film

"A Cat in Paris" Alain Gagnol and Jean-Loup Felicioli XX This is animated oscar bait.
"Chico & Rita" Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal XX Same here.
"Kung Fu Panda 2" Jennifer Yuh Nelson
"Puss in Boots" Chris Miller
"Rango" Gore Verbinski XXXXXXX00000000 Compared to the other noms, this is by far the best.
Art Direction

"The Artist" XXXXX While it's a beautiful film, this is extended love for The Artist. It wouldn't be a shocker if this won, nor would I be dissapointed.
"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" 000000000000000000000000- Any love for my man HP!
"Hugo"XXXXX See The Artist.
"Midnight in Paris" XXXX000000000 Beautiful film. Great to see a Woody Allen movie get noms for craft categories.
"War Horse"

Cinematography
Here, it's fair game. Anyone can win. So there is no will win. So I put my should win marks on the movies I want to win the most and least.
"The Artist" Guillaume Schiffman 0000
"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" Jeff Cronenweth 0000
"Hugo" Robert Richardson 00
"The Tree of Life" Emmanuel Lubezki 0000
"War Horse" Janusz Kaminski 0
Costume Design

"Anonymous" This was kind of lazy and kind of under ratted. A surprise nom, certainly, but I don't know if it was deserved or not.
"The Artist" XXX00
"Hugo" XX00
"Jane Eyre" 00
"W.E."
Directing

"The Artist" Michel Hazanavicius XXX00 see Hugo
"The Descendants" Alexander Payne
"Hugo" Martin Scorsese XXXXX00 Hugo might slip into the lead, because it won all the awards advantage. But The Artist has a fair shot.
"Midnight in Paris" Woody Allen 00000
"The Tree of Life" Terrence Malick

Film Editing

"The Artist" XXXXXX
"The Descendants"
"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" XXX000000000000000000000000000000000 has nearly no awards advantage but is sooooo awesome in its editing, it might pull it off.
"Hugo" XXX
"Moneyball"
Foreign Language Film

"Bullhead" Belgium
"Footnote" Israel
"In Darkness" Poland
"Monsieur Lazhar" Canada
"A Separation" Iran Never saw any of the

And, as usual since the beginning of the 00's, I mostly don't agree and feel frustrated by the list. Last Year, my biggest disappointment was the cold reception of "Scott Pilgrim", but here?

What about :
Michael Shannon as Actor in a Leading Role for "Take Shelter" and Michael Fassbender for "Shame",
Rachel Weisz as Actress in a Leading Role for "The Whistleblower",
Andy Serkis as Best Actor in a Supporting Role for "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" or Joseph Gordon-Levitt for "Hesher",
Kim Wayans as Best Actress in a Supporting Role for "Pariah" or Carey Mulligan for "Shame",
"The Adventure of Tintin" instead of "Kung-Fu Panda 2" for Animated Feature Film.
"Shame" and "Limitless" instead of "War Horse" or "The Three of Life" for Best Cinematography.
"Made in Dagenham" for Best foreign.
For the Documentary, I've only seen "If a Tree Falls..." and "From Hell & Back Again", but what the Hell about missing nominations for "These Amazing Shadows" and "Beats, Rhymes & Life" ?!?! Come on Hollywood!!!

But it's too late now so, I guess my predictions would be :
- Best Actor : Jean Dujardin (No real competition except Demian Bichir, but in a movie about an illegal immigrant trying to provide a better life for his soon to be Gang member son, Too much a Stand to take for Hollywood lol)
- Best Actress : Michelle Williams, she just nailed Marilyn (like so many others... lol), But Hollywood has such a love story with Meryl Streep that I would be piss but not surprised if she wins.
- Best supporting Actor: This is where the competition is tight ah ! Between Kenneth Branagh who just resurrected Sir Laurence Olivier, Nick Nolte expressing his real life's nevrosis and alcoholism, Christopher Plummer in a Gay Politics drama and an outstanding silent performance from Max von Sydow, veteran who could get this as Lifetime achievement win... I just can't be sure lol
- Best supporting Actress : I want to believe in Janet Mc Teer, but "The Help" is such a nice washed out lifetime movie about segregation and Jim Crow, that Octavia Spencer will probably take it home thanks to her snappy black attitude (Just enough to not be stereotypical).

Comment by Fancy Lucas on January 25, 2012 at 1:18pm

- Best Director, Cinematography and Best Movie : "Hugo", Martin Scorsese  x3. Didn't like the movie that much mostly because of the excruciating first hour and bad Acting. Yet, there's nothing even remotely comparable 3D speaking and the Homage to the whole birth of the essence of Hollywood as a dream factory that put me in tears by the end of the movie should be enough to close the deal. But "The Help" could be the Hollywood's apology for 1985's Color Purple cold race (Washed out, more accessible. Hard History Movie for Women. If you look at the reception of "The Blind Side" Perfect for American white mainstream guilt), and "The Three of Life" that took the Palme D'or, so since I still don't understand what happened, Lightning could stick twice lol (But if it does, that'd definitely be a Steal !).
As a French, I'm unprofessionally crossing my fingers for "The Artist" (With Hugo and Midnight in Paris, My Country is well represented this year lol)

For the rest, I will take the time to look at my favorite section : The Short Animated Film ! I've only seen "The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris", but I’m looking forward to get all the others.
