Well, I just heard from a friend of mine that Tangled was a great Disney film and had pretty darn good musicals as well. For some reason (My mind is constantly guggling) I thought to myself “What other movies have really good animated musical moments” and that’s where this list came from. I will do 15 of my favorite animated musical numbers for reason A B and C. Why 15, BECAUSE I WANT TO THAT’S WHY! NOW LETSSS DOO THISS! HEAD TO THE CHO….sorry, lost focus. Lets begin……!


#15. The Prayer from Quest for Camelot

I’m a little bit mixed with film basically it is an ok Disney film made by WB (Surprising because they also have Mask of the Phantasm). This song, to me is very good and probably pretty notorious for some reason. If you watch American Idol, you will probably hear this song a few times. It is good; however, the problem is that it feels awkward for that particular moment of our main protagonist being chased by creatures. I understand what it means, a prayer from a loving mother to her daughter; however, it should have been used later, when she’s SAFE! I like the song, it just feels shoehorned into a scene that it shouldn’t have been in.

#14. Just Say Yes from Secret of NIMH 2

Don’t get me wrong, I DISPISE THIS MOVIE AND WANT TO BURN IT TO THE GROUND….except this scene. Most of my favorite songs are villain songs, so don’t be very surprised with this list. The main reason this song is on my list is for one great reason; ERIC IDLE IS THE VILLAIN! All I could say with this was just WIN and enjoy the musical. Although I did hate the twist in that it was just so stupid and kind of self fulfilling when you think about it, this musical made me ALMOST have a complete 180 for this film. Sure, the rest is crap, but I do enjoy this little piece. My favorite part is at the end when he lets Timmy go making me say “YEAH!” at the end. Obviously the one problem with this that I do have is that it with all the crap that I had to sit through, the song didn’t stand out as well as it should have.


#13. Ratican from the great mouse Detective

VINCENT PRICE! This isn’t the best animated musical number; however, it does do a good job presenting our antagonist who is voiced by one of the greatest of his generation, Mr. Price. He is a good singer and a good actor for making the rat sophisticated yet still that typical evil you find in a lot of Disney films. Once again VINCENT FRICKEN PRICE!

#12. One Jump Ahead from Aladdin

Although it is kind of a typical way to introduce your character, it is the best one I’ve heard. Aladdin is my second favorite Disney animated movie and this song is my favorite in the film. It is fun, well paced and just plain entertaining. I especially love it when he is almost “raped” by that weird girl in the middle of the run.


#11.Never Say Never from American Tail

Even though a little bit slowly, it is pretty darn heartwarming song. This is Don Bluth’s first song he put into a movie and he does a pretty darn good job at making it. It is well done, strong and just plain heartwarming all together.


#10 I won’t say I’m in love from Hercules

It is a typical song of girl afraid to admit her love to the fair hero; however, I think this one is the best. While a lot of songs of this caliber feels a little bit cliché, this one feels a little bit different probably because how its song. Meg has felt the sting of love before and doesn’t want to experience it again, so it does feel a little bit different from the normal love at first sight gag that has been done WAY to many times. It is a cliché, yet fun and interesting, musical number.


#9. Can’t keep a good dog down from All Dogs go to Heaven

Just one thing about this; pure fun! Don Bluth knew how to make a fun and entertaining beginning musical number. Good animation, ok singing (Charlie’s voice actor isn’t the best singer on the block) and just plain fun and entertaining to allow use to settle with the dark rest of the film.

#8. In the Dark of the Night from Anestasia

  Probably the most terrifing musical number on this list. When I watched this, even now, my spine feels something clawing on it ever so softly; just plain creepy really. The way it was animated, writen and sung was great for making a near gothic villain theme rather than making a fun villain theme. 


#7. The Plague from Prince of Egypt

EPIC. This movie does feel like it should have been longer so that people of the original Prince of Egypt (10 Commandments) fans would stop complaining about what is left out of the film; however, this is still great by its own merit and is the best Dreamworks animated feature. This song not only is awesome, it also is a good representation of the whole setting of the film’s main plot; the rivalry between two brothers. It shows how Remises gets over his head because he believes that he is the “weak link” of the family and how Moses just wants everything to be back the way it use to be when they were younger. Good effects, good animation, powerful music, great singing, and a good usage of moving the plot along rather than patting it out.

#6. Dream to Dream from American Tail 2

This one is defiantly a definition of a surprise, especially for me when I began to grow up. I learned about this sequel when I was about 14, and watching terrible direct to DVD sequels, I thought that this one was defiantly going to be bad because it was a direct to video movie that wasn’t directed by Don Bluth. When I watched this, I actually loved this sequel, especially this song. It was crafted very well and the song and voice just blew me a way. The weirdest thing about this song that it is song by Blossom from Power Puff Girls . . . awesome. Unfortunately, I couldn’t give you the video of the scene; however, I will tell you that I felt the same way the cat felt *watch it and you will know*


#5. Reflections from Mulan


I don’t care what people think about this movie, I just plain love this Disney film and this song is the best song of the whole film. The song is so different from any Disney film for a few darn good reasons; Chinese background music, giving the main character more character development presenting her more than the stereotypical damsel in distress and just making you feel sad for her all at once. It is short; however, for me, almost unforgettable because of how strong it truly is.


#4. Be Prepared from the Lion King


This is defiantly the most fun I’ve had in a villain’s song. It is dark and gruesome while being entertaining and kid worthy. Sure, a lot of people have mixed feelings about the Lion King as a whole; however, they would shut up about this song because it’s the villain’s song, and villain’s songs are always awesome by their own merit.


#3 Gaston’s Theme from Beauty and the Beast


Did I say Be Prepared? My mistake, I meant this song because it is extremely just plain F-U-N fun! It basically just showing off this stereotypical hero-turned-to-villain to bring his spirits back from being denied by Belle, the main protagonist, and every second is funny as H-E-double hockey sticks. How this guy punches his little assistant in the beginning and middle makes laugh out of my seat. It is all plain fun and entertainment, much like moments in Shakespeare; fun and entertainment to get you ready for dark and scare moments later in the film.


#2. Hells fire from Hunchback of Nostra Dame

Obvious choice, don’t you think? What BALLS Disney had to even put this in the storyboard and say “this sounds kid~worthy”. The animation, the message and how it is an adaptation from the book, is perfect in every single way possible. This song is on the level of villainy with the villain from Sleeping Beauty because it shows the villain more as a man wanting the love of something that he can’t truly have because of his profession and religious beliefs. The song is extremely symbolic of how religion can turn you into a hypocrite, love can send you to a place you don’t want to go to, and how sin doesn’t mean it came from the Superdevil himself. There is no reason why this is #2 because of its perfection; however, for obvious reasons, I love #1 just a little bit more.


#1. Soon You’ll Come Home (To My Heart) From All Dogs Go to Heaven

I know a lot of people think that my #9 is the best song from All Dogs go to Heaven; however, I believe there is a really good reason why this one in particular to be my #1; its powerful simplicity. As I said before, this was Don Bluth’s second and best animated musical because of how out of the normal; this song is the perfect example of how different it is from other Disney and non Disney films alike., What makes this song so different is its simplicity while still being very powerful simultaneously. While a lot of animated films would drag it out and put singing birds and wind out of nowhere (I’ll looking at you Pocahontas -_-), Don Bluth’s fantastic direction to this made it simple and as tear-jerking as the end of the film. I know that this is similar to Reflections from Mulan; however, this number is, for me, more powerful with its simplicity than Mulan was. And I will admit, this is the first animated film that made me cry when I was younger. When watching the film, I knew it was dark; however, I was still having fun, then this came on. The more it came on, the more I just sat silently and felt weird because I watched Disney before this and it was extremely surprising to my little mind. It never relies on anything by the picture of what Rosie wants in her life, and Don Bluth just said “NO! No Disney crap, this is how it should and will be done!” and does it to near perfection. Much like Hells fire in its power in epicenes and symbolism, Soon You’ll Come home is great because of its powerful simplicity that still gives me a tiny tear especially at the end.
