James Gunn's 'Guardians of the Galaxy' continues to make strides. Early last month, Chris Pratt ('Parks and Recreation') was hired to play Peter Quill (alias Star-Lord), the leader of this team of intergalactic superheroes. So now that our central protagonist is in place, what about the rest of the group? A few weeks ago, the rumor mills were creating a buzz around Jason Momoa landing the role of Drax The Destroyer. Momoa was rumored to even be circling a deal, but today the official word has come down and a rather different performer has landed the gig. WWE wrestler, and mixed martial artist, Dave Bautista will be playing Drax in Gunn's 'Guardians of the Galaxy.' Drax is a formerly-human character whose spirit was transported to a more powerful host by Kronos after the murder of Drax's family. He is resurrected, solely for the purpose of eliminating Thanos, as a green warrior with the powers of flight, strength, and energy blasts. Bautista most recently appeared in 'The Man with the Iron Fists' and will also be featured in 'Riddick' later this year.
Dave Bautista? Really? Don't get me wrong, I don't think Jason Momoa is the greatest actor of his generation, but I would better dollars to dumbbells he can act circles around Dave Bautista. I'm not even categorically opposed to athletes making the transition to acting. Dwayne Johnson, formerly The Rock, was able to do so with aplomb, but that is largely thanks to his natural charisma and the fact that he spent years creating an elaborate and captivating character in the ring. However, I've always found Bautista in the ring to be as charismatic and captivating as a pile of raw meat. I honestly can't see how anyone found him to be the best person for the job, and frankly it makes me wonder if Marvel's only concern with this character is that he is played by a muscle-bound jock. Is that really the best approach to ensuring that the film does justice to its source? On the other hand, I have been touting the merits of Marvel's fearlessness and bold casting/hiring decisions for a long time, and I guess, whether I agree with it or not, this is in fact a bold choice. I suppose I'll have to defer to James Gunn on this one and hope that he knows what he is doing.
What do you guys think? Is Dave Bautista the right choice for Drax? Do you think this production has gotten out of hand or do you trust Marvel and Gunn?

Comment by Philly Made Punk on March 19, 2013 at 10:54pm Eh, I'll give him a chance. Bautista was passable as a talker, but not captivating. It was when he was a bad guy in 2010 that he started to say memorable quotes like: "Your suppose to be my friend!" to Rey Mysterio. But the only wrestler besides The Rock who should act in a big movie is CM Punk!
Comment by D.E.S. on March 18, 2013 at 4:19pm So basically he'll be used like he was in THE MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS?
While I like Mamoa, his acting has been bashed in almost everything he's been in and I think perhaps they decided this reputation was a concern. Bautista is a blank card. A standard muscle actor that you call in for the "tough minion" B-roles that dont require much presence outside of how many people wind up unconscious after they appear. For that he's suitable and with the right effects, a few well directed lines of dialog and a favorable set of co-stars around him they could probably get a decent result.
Comment by D.E.S. on March 18, 2013 at 4:03am Well, since Batista hasn't wrestled in years this might actually be a good move for him. Given the current crop of wrestlers (minus David Otunga) who are in movies that go to Straight-to-video hell.

Comment by Lorenzo Moran on March 18, 2013 at 2:13am I really hope he does great in this role. This is really what Bautista needs, a performance that'll send him into the ranks of Steve Austin and Dwayne Johnson. And sure, it might take more than this but this will indeed be a great start. We'll never know till the final product so please, don't be so cynical and don't draw conclusions. You'll never know what crazy hat trick any could pull off.
I wish Momoa accepted the role. Oh well....
