Sam Raimi's 'The Evil Dead' set a new standard for the horror genre; creating new rules from the fragments of those he had broken. Likewise, 'Evil Dead II' set the standard for horror sequels. It is therefore not surprising that even before the official wide release of Fede Alvarez's 'Evil Dead' remake, an in-development sequel has been announced. During the Q&A following the film's premiere at the SXSW Film Festival here in Austin, writer/director Alvarez broke the news that he was already writing the second installment. The remake will open in theaters nationwide on April 4th.
I happen to be at SXSW, and I got a chance to see 'Evil Dead.' Despite my fears, my uneasiness with the prospect of remaking such an important horror film, the remake is pretty freaking awesome. It utilizes a ton of sensational practical effects and is among the goriest studio horror films I've ever seen. It's also a blast from start to finish, and I have to applaud Alvarez for capturing so much of the spirit of the original without being a shot-for-shot rehash. As mentioned before, given the success of Raimi's 'Evil Dead II,' with a large contingent of fans actually preferring it to the first one, it really was inevitable that we would be getting a sequel to the new film. And you know, that whole franchise name recognition thing is still a priority in Hollywood. So now the question becomes, will Alvarez's 'Evil Dead' sequel be as whacky and feature as much dream logic as Raimi's?
What do you guys think? Is it wise for the 'Evil Dead' remake to become a franchise? Are they treading on even holier ground venturing into 'Evil Dead II' territory?

Comment by Jon Riddle on March 12, 2013 at 2:28pm This re-creates a situation that has happened a few other times in horror movies (The Hills Have Eyes, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) that illustrates how fucking ridiculous the current trend of franchising has become. Will the sequel to the remake of The Evil Dead also be a remake of Evil Dead II? The fact that this report is forced to ponder such an absurdity shows how franchise crazy movie-makers have become.
Comment by Fernando Palacios on March 12, 2013 at 2:26pm well I don't have any problems with The first movie being remake without ash, I can see it standing on its own as a horror film with out the character but as series of films, I do thing it couldn't work that well as the sequels had more to do with ash than with the horror setting of the first film, that was what keep the films interesting ...and the first evil dead is a really simple story and it doesn't leave too many loose ends to build good sequel
Comment by Dreux Pronounced Drew on March 12, 2013 at 6:33am @FernandoI completely disagree with the notion that Evil Dead is not Evil Dead without Ash. Ash and how he evolved was just representative of how the series progressed. He adapted to the movie around him. Evil Dead only needs to be relentless with it's audience, whether it be with buckets of gore or Three Stooges-esque slapstick. The beauty of Evil Dead is that, more than any other horror franchise I can think of, as long as it retains that element of excess, it can be dressed however it wants. Think of it this way; if Raimi's original cabin-in-the-woods horror series concluded with a fantasy-comedy film, with a completely different title, and in a completely different setting, then imagine where else it could end up with a fresh start. The Evil Dead more or less lead to a sequel that could easily be seen as it's own stand alone movie; something completely original, and I think that fact that Raimi is apparently writing a follow-up to Army of Darkness while keeping this new series moving forward says it all. We don't know how Alvarez will progress his take on the series, and as long as it retains that spirit and isn't just a series of remakes of the original trilogy, it shouldn't be disappointing. So, let's not dwell on this new movie's lack of Ash, okay?
Comment by Fernando Palacios on March 12, 2013 at 5:11am the whole thing about Evil Dead as a film series was watching the Evolution of Ash as a character along with the films is genres... without ash its not longer the evil dead series

Comment by VoiceoftheBoa on March 11, 2013 at 11:36pm My hope is we get a SXSW review like Cabin In the Woods did last year. But as far the sequel goes... I can't say I'm surprised. It's rare to find a good horror film lately that doesn't get a sequel.
Comment by Zahodboty on March 11, 2013 at 5:35pm Will there be a review from the spillcrew soon? or we will have to wait after the actual release date?
You had me at "practical effects"
Comment by Majin B-mag on March 11, 2013 at 3:34pm The Evil Dead trilogy are one of the best horror films ever!
A sequel to Fede Alvarez's Evil Dead remake? ... Just as long as they keep using Practical Effects, I'm good.
