Comment by Virgil Tibbs on February 24, 2013 at 11:47am Arguing whether religion is good or bad gets you no where because your not getting to the heart of the issue. Religions claim to be "true" or represent reality as we know it, but they can not back up the claims they make. When your beliefs are out of conjunction with reality, your decision making ability becomes more flawed than it normally would.
religion has mostly done more good than harm in the long run
Any real benefit of religion can be replicated through secular means. You can do "good" without believing in people returning from the dead and ladders going all the way to heaven.
Sense of Community, charitable giving, morality, etc. Don't need religion for any of that.
dogma of a religion is almost always goodhearted
LOL!!!!!!!!!! My knowledge is limited to a lot of Christianity and Zen Buddhism and a tiny bit of Islam, so keep this in mind. I strongly disagree with the above quote. Both Christianity and Islam has a strong "believe our religion or else" mentality as seen in their respective Holy books. In Christianity, the one unforgivable sin is not believing that Christianity is true. You can be a loving, awesome person but end up burning in hell for eternity because you did not accept Christianity. In the Catholic Church's doctrine, people that do not believe in God are "not fully human". The Bible endorses slavery, genocide, abortion and the execution of homosexuals. It includes immoral concepts like "Original Sin", where future generations are punished for the crimes of their fore bearers. Islam is similar in this regard. For example, the Quran says Muslims that leave the religion are to be executed.
The rhetoric has softened because the times are changing, the bronze age morality of these religions just can't keep up.
Comment by VECTOR_911 on February 23, 2013 at 9:48pm I don't understand time and time again korey and Leon will talk about taking a step back and looking at things from both sides and even korey claims to be the most fair person out of everyone on the site. But when it comes to religion they become the exact opposite of that instantly condemning it without even a mention of all the good religion has brought people. Its funny something as big as religion not just one but religion as a whole they continually treat it as black and white. And with every rant it seems more and more that there dislike of religion comes from a place of ignorance now that may be just the way im precising it and im totally fine with being wrong. If they have a legitimate and logical reason for thinking ALL religion is bull shit than i will be fine with that but for know that's what it seems like. My main reason why i wanted to make this comment was to state that all tho i am sorta religious i have lots of atheist friends and i want people who believe in religion to realize not ALL atheist go on rants about religion don't make what you hear now apply to all atheist NOT ALL ATHEIST try to slander and make mockery's of religion there some moderate non-assholishish atheists. And sometimes the ones that do at least have some pretty intellectual things to say that will change the way you view things in life and leave you a better person for it other than all religion is bullshit
Comment by ilia katritch on February 22, 2013 at 12:26am B.Bally, I dissagree, I believe that while the dogma of a religion is almost always goodhearted, and I don't doubt Mohammad or Jesus, if they existed, weren't great and forgiving people. However, people tend to ignore all parts that they don't like, like the people who highlight the anti-gay marriage passage in the bible, yet ignore the part that only virgin women can get married. Religion is bad as a whole for me because it lets shit people get away with horrible things and trick good people into following them. Why follow the king? because God said so! Why kill this woman? Because God hates witches. Even nowadays, it lets priests constantly get away with child molestation and gives people the justification of b/c God said so to kill doctors that offer abortions. I'm not saying being religious = being asshole, but asshole + religious power = shitstorm. Religion is a great way to get people to make communities, but with internet, cell phones, and pop-culture, we do it all the time anyways, and religious gatherings are so much stronger, more violent, and restrictive than all but hate groups, as in the hands of the wrong leaders, it becomes a hate group, such as the west baptist church. Religion was a vital tool to helping human culture and achievement, but It was also a huge problem. Nowadays, it is unnecessary, as we have other ways of gathering, and the problem is so much greater nowadays, as their texts are getting older and more conflicting with modern needs.
Comment by B.Bally on February 20, 2013 at 9:29pm I disagree, religion has mostly done more good than harm in the long run, extremist thoughts on the other hand whether religious, non-religious, political has done nothing but harm. Even if religion didn't exist, people would find other ways to screw things up like using race or cultural pride as tools, hell the Crusade mainly happened because of land.
One of things I find interesting about the Muhammad drawings (which were mostly in bad taste mind you) is that if Muhammad was alive today, I doubt he would throw a fit over it. The idol worshipers of Mecca insulted him, threw stones at him and tried to kill him, once he conquered Mecca, he could've given them a taste of their own medicine but he didn't, he actually ordered his followers to leave them be and let them keep their faith.
So basically the violent reactions from muslims to the cartoons contradicts Muhammed's own actions.

Comment by Lionel 192 on February 20, 2013 at 6:30am Korey finally dissing Islam a bit is a relief. You guys always joked about Catholics because you knew that no harm would come from them to you. Like Bill Maher says, you only attack those who you know won't retaliate against you. I applaud you, Korey.
Comment by Korey on February 20, 2013 at 3:50am "Quotes from famous people doesn't make a belief truth." - Korey Coleman
"Think for yourself and not what famous quotes and childhood brainwashing tells you to believe." - Korey Coleman
"If Isaac Newton was alive, how would he explain being born into one religion, thus being fucked by another?" - Korey Coleman
Comment by Korey on February 20, 2013 at 3:44am You want a reply, Gooner. Okay. I wasn't joking. While I respect people's right to believe what they want and people's right to practice whatever religion suits them, I have a forum to express my opinions as I see fit. I find religion more harmful than good. It's manipulative, divisive, hypocritical, incites fear, and isn't in no way required to be a good person. So, with respect, I say fuck 'em all. That includes Islam. Sorry.
Comment by The Black Swordsman on February 20, 2013 at 12:47am Let them make fun of religion. Don't worry we have enough people making fun of the irrationality that is atheism as it is.
"Atheism is so senseless and odious to mankind" - Isaac Newton
"I find it as difficult to understand a scientist who does not acknowledge the presence of a superior rationality behind the existence of the universe as it is to comprehend a theologian who would deny the advances of science." - Wernher von Braun (Considered to be the greatest rocket scientist of all time by NASA)
"Atheism is the most daring of all dogmas, for it is the assertion of a universal negative" - G. K. Chesterton
