One of the first things that happened when Disney purchased Lucasfilm last year, and announced they were putting new 'Star Wars' films into development, was that practically everyone associated with any previous 'Star Wars' property came out of the woodwork to declare in interviews that they were interested in, or at least open to, returning to the franchise. This was most likely due to the fact that it became the number one question any interviewer asked them at that point, and didn't mean anything in terms of an actual deal. However, today Latino Review is claiming to have confirmation that Harrison Ford is officially returning as Han Solo. During a televised interview, a spokesperson for the scoop-happy movie news site stated that they apparently have a legitimate source inside the studio and have "triple checked" the authenticity of this bombshell. It is not known at this time whether he will return for 'Episode VII' or one of the spin-offs. In fact, we're not even sure if it will be a cameo or a central role, though the deal is said to be substantial. As of this posting, Disney has not confirmed Ford's return.
So many huge grains of salt here. I'm always weary of Latino Review's scoops, but to their credit, I've never seen them so assured of their accuracy that they went on TV to broadcast a scoop. Granted, if they are wrong, they'll just claim the studio is "false denying." All that said, devil's advocate time, I really and truly hope that Harrison Ford is only returning to the role of Solo as a cameo. I love this character, and I am very much looking forward to a new batch of 'Star Wars' films free of the influence of a completely out-of-touch George Lucas, but the worst thing J.J. Abrams could do at this point is build in a series of winks and nods to the original series that end up being more memorable than the new storylines. Plus, as I've said before, and as much as I adore Harrison Ford, he's far too old to be an action hero anymore. That's not ageist so much as it is based on the woeful 'Crystal Skull' precedent. Hopefully he will be utilized in the same fashion as was Leonard Nimoy in Abrams' 'Star Trek.'
What do you guys think? Are you happy about the prospect of Harrison Ford returning as Han Solo? How big of a role do you think older Solo will play?

Comment by Joe Cool on February 18, 2013 at 11:19pm To think that even Han Solo would be the same at age 35 as age 70 is absurd, so to expect Han to be doing the same things he was doing in his youth into his senior age is equally absurd. Han Solo can still be a major player in any Star Wars films, but the character will have surely grown and changed with time. He may still be as witty, but he's surely worlds wiser and more responsible too. He learned that in his youth. Assuming he married Princess Leia (please do not discuss EU, it's irrelevant) I always envisioned him in some high position of military security or such in a newly establish galactic government (kinda like a "Chief of Security of Coruscant" or something like that), he's not a politician, that or he broke her heart and split and kept smuggling until he made his fortune and is retired (and or/in hiding) on some tropical planet!
Comment by Kroxigor on February 17, 2013 at 7:51pm Fine with it as long as he does a good job!
Comment by I'm Batman on February 17, 2013 at 6:58pm @ Adam I agree with "C". Watching an old Solo is like watching a senior citizen play Indiana Jones. It sucks and it's not gonna work. Spock works great if not better in old age, Solo does not.
Comment by Adam Meilstrup on February 17, 2013 at 2:39pm @ C you still can't assume you know how Harrison is going to do. As you stated if it isn't the money he's interested in, then it's got to be he's genuinely interested in returning. IF he's actually interested in it, then he'll be more likely to deliver a better performance. Which I believe, he still has left in him.

Comment by C on February 17, 2013 at 12:49am @ Adam you're comparing an older Spock to an older Han Solo, two characters who couldn't be more different and youth suits Solo much better. Nimoy has been doing Spock for nearly 50 years now, from TOS to the VI films, a few appearances in The Next Generation and again in Star Trek (2009). As such we've watched the character grow and evolve. Can't say the same for Solo, we've seen him for 3 films taking place over a period of around 3-5 years. To have him come back as a 70 year old greatly limits what he can do and is such a jarring change from the character we knew.
I do find it ironic though given that Ford initially wasn't too keen on returning for Return of the Jedi as it was, now these rumours state he's a lock, it couldn't be the money, so I wonder why the change of heart (if it's true)?

Comment by Adam Meilstrup on February 16, 2013 at 5:21pm To everyone that is saying Ford is too old, Nimoy was 77 when he did Star Trek and he did a great job. Anyone who thinks JJ is going to be using him for action purposes is naive. Enjoy that Han Solo is coming back bitches.
