Dr.Horrible posted a statusI was aware of Brian Helgeland's Jackie Robinson biopic '42,' due to be released this year, but it was seeing the trailer before another movie in theaters this week that really got me excited for it. Chadwick Boseman steps into the role of the pioneering athlete who broke the professional baseball color barrier and became the first African-American to play the game. Harrison Ford costars as Branch Rickey, the president and GM of the Brooklyn Dodgers who signed Robinson. Now, we have a new poster for Helgeland's film. I like the inverted image of Robinson sliding into home plate, because it works as a metaphor for his continuous uphill struggle. Take a look at the poster below and let us know what you think.
'42' hits theaters April 12th

@ Dr. Detfink
I only brought it up because the first Cuban to play Major League Baseball was Esteban Bellan in the 1870s! It seemed relevant when responding to comments on a film about the first African American to play in the league.
Comment by Dr. Detfink on February 10, 2013 at 9:03am Boy, good thing I'll never famous because I would hate for people to make a point that I was half Cantonese and half Italian with an Irish last name that is often mistaken as Polish. I mean, REALLY we're going to break down the % of race on a guy?
The most important thing we get from the Jackie Robinson story is how baseball actually was progressive when the color line was broken. You STILL had other professions that human beings would NOT sniff based on color of skin. I don't know how much more we need to complicate the fact that there are a lot of people who are VERY poor at breaking down racial characteristics. So yes a lot of people get homogenized in the process.
Looking forward to this movie, even though it does look like that typical sports style biopic. Give you an example, when Jackie got spiked. It could be conceived that it was race motivated but players get spiked all the time, making the throw from 2B to 1B.
Folks do know that there are white and black Cubans right? It doesn't take away the fact that he was an african american. Most black americans that descended from slaves are mixed with other races. I wonder if his death threats took any of his Cuban heritage into consideration.

Comment by Pop Snot on February 9, 2013 at 11:45am Half Cuban or not. He was still a black man.
Comment by I'm Batman on February 8, 2013 at 11:33pm Lets hope after the success of Lincoln, Hollywood makes more movies about historical figures.
